Placement of Request Fails

Todor,

I have included the requested tables. To answer your questions I have
two environments based on geographic location. My criteria is set to
reflect that.

Locations (2):

CCC Development
MOB

However I have not added any inventory objects from the MOB location
because I can't even get CCC Development to deploy machines.

All of my Criteria mappings I have right now are to allow CCC
Development to all inventory objects but not MOB.

I have eliminated my Add to Domain inventory object and just have it
joing a workgroup. Until I can get that to work there is no reason to
try to join a domain.

Modify rights for the requester role ; not allowed to put off a VM.

This can be done most easily by applying a custom style sheet.

The effect is to hide the power off control for all users from the LCM webview.

As LCM Administrator, in the configuration section, add a new element to the location Custom Style Sheet and then enter:

li.vmo_stop_command, li.vmo_stop_command-vmo_disabled {
display: none;
}

LCM Microsoft plugin error

Hi rmargrove,

Can you post a larger screenshot showing the error in the right pane or the server.log file?
Also, the Microsoft plugin is a vCO plugin, not an LCM one - it's not needed by LCM. So, if you don't intend to use it, you can disable it.

We are currently evaluating and testing VMware LifeCycle Manager 1.02. There are still some question open, and I hope I can get them answered in this Thread:

1. Is the WebGui available in another Languag as English? As far as I have seen it is only in english?

2. Is it possible to customize the ''Requester-Site''? Meaning that the requester could also choose more than 1 Harddisk, define Disk-Size or additional questions etc.?

3. Can I block the options such as CPU or RAM for the Technical Requester? example: Thechnical Requester can only manipulate CPU and RAM, no Disks or Datastore!

Multiple vCenter servers in Lifecycle manager

Thanks all for your help, i had been restarting the vCO config server and vCO services between each change to no avail.

so i decided to strip out the 3 problematic servers, and restart the server and add them one at a time, restarting the services at each server addition and testing the connection.

2 of the 3 worked first time, however i still have issue browsing one of the servers (again all the SSL certs and servers added and tested sucsessfully from the vCO configurator)

the only way to get the last one working was to use the IP address rather than the name of the server, once i amended this the server resources is now browsable in lifecycle manager.

I did as you suggested and redeployed the "com.vmware.lcm.package" file and that resolved the problem for me. Be prepared to spend 10-15 minutes checking the MANY MANY boxes for each of the elements of the package to import. The java client is in dire need of a "check all" button;-)

The default credentials are vmware / vmware. It's advised to change them once you log in for the first time.

You mention it working with integrated OpenLDAP and then you mention using a different LDAP.

Once LCM has been initialized, the LDAP IDs are set and you cannot change LDAP. Please continue to use the LDAP server used when LCM was initialized.

LCM 1.0.1 - Mail Configuration Problem

Bill, your patched contributed solving also my issue (I had an identical problem).

The only unusual thig is that I continue having the SMTP_HOST_UNREACHABLE error message, but now I have green circle instead of red triangle (boh in mail plugin section, and in server section... so now I'm able to start/restart/stop server even if the error message is still displayed). Mail have always been working (even if there was that error message), so now it's almost OK (the perfect solution'd had the error message deleted too... but who cares? :-)))

EDIT: It seems that only Tertiaer (the thread starter) is able to award your solution as correct answer... :-|

Unfortunately, the sysprep runonce facility is not exposed in LCM standard. The VC API does expose this field so with some LCM customization it should be possible to access the capability.

LCM standard does not use the saved guest customization specifications on VC.

Is it throwing any web exception error when you are going anotther page? IF it so VMware Orchestrator Configuration --> General --> Miscellaneous, do you have the box checked for "Webview development enabled"? I uncheck that and restart your server.

Well, the three Bill mentions should be from the same cluster, but I think template and vmfolder would be valid across the datacentre (or in fact any datacentre! - as you note earlier wher you point out that you can see all three of your datacentres in the profile details).

Anyway, for another guess , have you checked that the domain you have specified is valid for the network you have specified? (hint, I think you have to edit the domain to check which networks it is valid for )

LCM you can install with same Virtual Center Server as well but recommended is another machine becasue LCM also fetch data from the database VC also use the same so when both push & pull data there may be some performance isssue occure otherwise there is no problem to install LCM with VC.

the vm folder is just a default folder, a bit like 'hosts'. It's probably best to create your own folders underneath, and use meaningfull unique names. It's not currently possible to register a folder under a different name.

Yes, you can import existing virtual machines. Look in the Administration section. You can import individual virtual machines as well as all VMs in a folder or a resource pool. You can designate an owner, associate criteria values, set a decommission date and capture the historical setup cost and on-going monthly maintenance charges.

VM with two disks - deployment problem

Hi,

I need to create VM with two vmdks located on two different datastores. One vmdk hosts OS files and is located on Datastore1 while second hosts page file and tmp files and is located on Datastore2. I created appropriate criteria and infrastructure mappings. After the approval VM is not created automatically, because there is datastore conflict, ie LCM cannot decide where to place the vmdks (it can see both datastores). During manual placement I cannot decide where to place particular vmdk files, too, so all VM files are landing on one datastore in same VM folder. I experimented a little. I created two templates, one where all template files are located on one datastore and second where vmdks are located on separate datastores. It didn't help.

Did anyone encounter similar problem?

No, this is not possible without customization. In the current release, the customization would require modifications to core workflows which would be broken during next LCM upgrade. A best practice is to install LCM on a different server from VC, but I cannot find in the docs where it says you should not use the VC server....

It could be a conflict in the Tomcat server between VC and LCM. It could also be a dependancy issue. Maybe the database is not fully started when LCM starts.

Perhaps I wasn't completely clear. I already know about email notificiations, and how to setup the groups for sending and how to customize the text of an email.

What I want to do is customize the text of the email so that it includes a link to the actual request. You can already include a link to the LCM website using the #webviewUrl text string. But I want to be able to include a link that will take the user directly to their request. So they don't have to go to the web site, find the right view, then hunt through the list for their particular request. When you get 200 requests in the queue, it can get to be lot of things to look for.

But this is verry odd. Following your advise I checked the file and searched the java client - everything is there. Then I went to LCM again to check again if it works and there it is - the timezone list was there. The strange thing is I didn't touch anything since I wrote the first post, so it kinda solved by itself

Importing VMs

Yes, you certainly can. You have to login to the LCM Web Interface as an LCM Admin, then click the Administration tab.

Once in Administration, you have a few options in the left for importing VMs. Be sure to specify Criteria for reporting purposes in the future since you cannot go back and set them after a VM has been imported. Specifying Criteria during an import does not affect placement or power status of a VM.

the installation page appears if the 'authorizedGroups' attribute has not been completed.

make sure you enter an ldap group for all the requested groups : users, authorisers,technical users etc.. in the 'Assign groups to roles' section of the setup.

if you have access to the java client, log in and check that the workflow 'First Configuration' ran with no errors (hint, search for it using the 'Text Finder' option under Tools menu.

then check that the configuration element 'webview configuration' element 'authorised groups' has a non-null entry. this is found in the 'Configurations' tab on the left of the java client.

In principle, LCM will support cloning operations supported by the VC you are using. So, it the version of your VC supports SUSE10, LCM should work.

If nobody else has recommendations here in the community on this issue, I would suggest opening an SR if possible. If this is a test environment, and you're comfortable posting them, it may be helpful to have a log dump made available.. perhaps there is some sort of indication there as to what the problem may be. If you wish to post the log, first attempt your setup process so that you get the failure. Right after you get the failure, login to the VMware Orchetrator Configuration and generate a log dump. Once you have the log.zip file post it as an attachment here for us to review.

For executing this workflow I need to pass values of different items of type as defined above. I am not sure of the different application defined item types, for example

lcm:ProvisioningToken

Properties

lcm:TokenDataKeys

lcm:JoinDomainInfo

Like wise there are many application defined item types that are used in other workflows.

Can anybody tell me how to retrieve appropriate values for application defined item type?

Is there any workflow that can be used to get these values?

Does any use LCM in a Service Provider model, where there are lots and lots of organisations, with sub-orgs and/or projects for each ?

Iam thinking about how to represent them in the Criteria mapping.

Each Org/suborg or Org/project would have different ResourcePools and folders, and possibly networks. But share templates/domains (within Org)

LCM Standard Automate Infrastructure Setup

Hmm, that makes it interesting... Each Infrastructure item that is imported to LCM is stored in a table or two in the LCM database. If this were my task, I would first note that this procedure is UNSUPPORTED.. I'd make a full backup of my database and then make a SQL Dump of it into a text file. Next, I'd go into the LCM Web interface as an admin and add an Infrastructure item. Then, I'd make another dump and use something like WINMERGE to compare the two dump files in order to determine which tables were changed. Next, I'd clear out those entries and write a script that enumerated through each element that I'm adding, and added the appropriate elements to the proper database tables. Once the script had run, I'd log back into the LCM Web interface as admin and map the criteria for the Infrastructure that was added, assuming the script did what it was written to do.

I'm not experienced with the scripting tools outside of Orchestrator so I wouldn't actually know how to do what I just described above. But, based on my prior experience with things that store stuff in a DB, that's the approach that I'd take.

This post does not endorse or validate such actions in any way and is my personal opinion on how I would tackle such a challenge

If you kept the default appliance settings (all databases are hosted in the appliance) then moving to another appliance will require doing the LCM setup from scratch again.
If you defined databases that are on another host then exporting the configuration on LCM 1.0 and then importing it on LCM 1.01 will work.

If you spent a lot of time setting up the original LCM then you can use a postgre admin tool to backup your LCM 1.0 appliance DB and restore this on LCM 1.01. If this is not the case I would recommend restarting from scratch to have a clean setup.

have you tested the login credentials and what do you mean the basic part of LDAP is working? you can download an ldap tool and ensure that the group and user account are properly registered and that ldap can call them up before trying the ldap searches.

For each of those Infrastructure Items, have you done a "Check All" for the matching Criteria in your configuration so that regardless of which criteria are selected, they all have a valid mapping back to your singe Infrastructure items?? If so, and this is still the case, it's not making much sense. Posting a log dump after attempting a request that fails to automap would be the next step here.

That's interesting that this information is not in the current publicly posted install and config guide for LCM 1.0.

For everyone's reference, here are the built-in / default username and password combinations for each of the 5 roles in the LCM Appliance:

lcmadmin / admin
lcmuser / user
lcmtechuser / techuser
lcmitstaff / itstaff
lcmapprover / approver

It should also be noted that if you wish to try out the VMware Orchestrator Client, it's best to use the "lcmadmin" user account with password "admin". When you open up the client, specify the hostname (if it resolves, otherwise use IP address), the username and password, then click "Login".

It would require replacing the Clone VM with customization workflow with the clone VM workflows and the customization one (that would be disabled in case guest OS does not support customization).

Hello Kelvin,

This happens when you don't have a criteria mapped to an infrastructure item. You should have at least 1 Infrastructure element for each type, INCLUDING Customization Template. For each and every Infrastructure element, you should map to at least one item in EACH of the criteria groups..

You can verify that you have at least one of each selected by reviewing each one of your infrastructure items on the Infrastructure tab OR by clicking on the Criteria Tab and checking each one of your criteria items. Each one should be mapped to one or more of the others.

Once you have everything mapping to something, retry your placement. This is almost always the problem - I even saw it today as I worked with a client

No, actually, look at it from the other way around because that's an easier way to manage it:

For each Infrastructure item, you should select AT LEAST one option from EACH Criteria..

For example:

Your Template item should have a check in at least one item in each of the 5 Criteria areas: Location, Organization, Server Environment, Service Level, Performance

This means that when you place a request, Each Criteria will have One or more of Each Infrastructure item associated with it. If there is only one Infrastructure item associated to each Criteria that your requester selects from the dropdowns, then the placement will be automatic since there are not multiple options.

Does that clear things up or make it even more confusing??
