The MSIUpgradeCode that's placed into Package.ini by SetupCapture is generated based on the inventory name. So my first guess would be that perhaps you used the same inventory name for multiple packages?

Error message at end of build: tlink.exe - No Disk
I attached a picture of the error which also has the last two lines on the batch file, if you press continue on this error message "3" times the build batch file finishes and the application virtualization is complete. I can open the app and use it, only thing is I'm wondering why this error message keeps coming up. I changed many settings in the "package.ini", tried differet versions, tried different operating systems (XP SP3 and Windows 7), and I tried many different apps. No matter what I do it this message always appears.

Any help is much appreciated thanks,
We are packaging our apps as MSI's using ThinApp 4.03 build 3313, then dropping the installer packages on C: and and running the installer from there. We are getting a meassage that says "The same or newer version of the "specific software (Dartfish in this case)" (VMware Thinapp) is already installed. I included a snopshot of the meassage below. Has anyone seen this, if so, have you found a solution. This has also happened with SPSS 17. The weird thing is we have a base image of the machine a Dell Optiplex 745 with XP pro installed and some base apps (that could not be thinapped) like Java, iTunes, Quicktime, Flash etc. and at first I recieved the meassage when trying to run the Dartfish MSI and the Inspiration 8 MSI, so I pushed out a new image to start over and the Inspiration 8 MSI ran fine but I still recieve the message with Dartfish and now SPSS 17.

Thanks for response, Cievo.

The SmartPlant 3D is a very specific program that is very expensive and only accesible if you have a valid license. To use it you need a license server, a oracle/sql database server, and the workstations. Of course, we are using it with a valid license.

I don't know other way to obtain the program.

ThinApp 4.0.3 Folder Creation

Hi there.

Hope you can help and can explain what I am trying to do. I install and application that is hardcoded to initially create and read an .ini file located in:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Company\APPName\APPFile.ini

When I thinapp the application, it now l creates the APPFile.ini in location:

D:\Documents and Settings\%username\Application Data\Thinstall\APPCaptureFolder\%AppData%\Company\APPName\APPFile.ini

(The D drive is a local drive that is used to store profile settings etc). Question is how can I create the folder D:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Company\APPName\ so can manually copy the file into it?

I have created the folder path before capturing the application but it does not create the folder. I have used there 'Merged' option when capturing the app.

If you need any more information please let me know.

Cheers,
Paul.

Hi,

Like I mentioned in my first post, the executable file from the bin folder which is the "CATIA P3 V5R19.exe" is not working for the

package which I made for USB and Thinstall option.

Meanwhile I figured the CATIA P3 V5R19.exe will work when I execute it in the partion which was used to make the package. In

this context I want to add it will work eventhough the Catia software was uninstalled. Maybe this is a memory issue?

I have a partition on my PC which has a clean OS dedicated for Thinapp.

Hello!

I have thinapped our ERM system with has two plugins. One is the Oracle Forms and Reports Client and the second a MS Office package.

The ERM system creates docs via OLE in combination with MS word. With a thin-apped Office 2003 there's no problem. So I have inserted the optional plugin in the package ini of the ERM thinapped system.

Next I've tried the same with MS Office 2007 as Thinapp-package. But the link between the ERM system and Office 2007 via Thinapp is broken; there's no chance to write docs.

Do you have any advices for OLE with Office 2007 as thinapp? I've already read that Thinapp doesn't support any OLE, but it still works with a thinapped Office 2003.

Yours sincerely

OpenOffice Spell Checking
Hello, i've tried to virtualize OpenOffice. It works fine, but the spell checker doesn't work in virtualization.

Also i've found http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/2009/03/how-to-create-a-thinapp-package-of-open-office-or-star-office.html but this doesn't help me. I saw also the comment of a user with the same problem, but no solution.

The Versions i've used is OpenOffice 3.1.1 (German) and ThinApp 4.0.3 (3313).

By the way, if i start the installed OpenOffice on the machine where the ThinApp is installed, the spellchecker is working.

Is this a Problem of ThinApp, or did someone have a solution?

Thinapp installation

Installing the .msi = copying the .exe (.dat) file + running ThinReg.
ThinReg will create shortcut entries on the desktop and in the Start Menu (if the original installer did that too) and will set up file type associations, so if you run ThinReg on a virtual Office package you can then double-click on a .doc file and it will open in Word. To do this, ThinReg (and, by extension, installing the .msi) has to add some entries to the system registry and add shortcuts to the system desktop/Start Menu. Other than that, isolation is still in effect.

ThinAPP vs InstallFree
Has anyone tried InstallFree? We are a ThinAPP shop for now, but it is becoming a pain in neck to work with Vmware's incompetent customer support and their non-disclosure policies. Anyway, we had a demo of InstallFree and it definitely has some cool features that ThinAPP is lacking - complete shell integration, easy process to upgrade packages (ThinAPP has one too but it never worked for us), no clean machine required to capture your packages and light-weight application provisioning tool that integrates very well with AD. They said they are releasing 64-bit support in January and I think it will be a serious competitor for ThinAPP. We will give it a serious consideration to make a switch when they have the 64-bit support.

If anyone of you have used InstallFree, can you share your experiences?

Thinapp Application slow launching times

Hello,

I have 2 questions.

1) When I create a package i am getting 2 files- one with .dat extension and another with .exe extension.
I would like to have just one package with .exe entension ( I have seen demos with 800mb single exe file thinapp package)

2) I created a thinapp package (followed Thinapp guide) . The problem is, when i launch the package within an administrator account, it takes 3 minutes to launch. In a non administrator account it takes 20 sec to launch. ( The application package requires don net 1.1 and 2). I have tried packaging dont net and applications in different thin app pacages and app linking, but with the same result.

Thank you
With the help of Mr.Geldorp I finished virtualization of BC 5.02.
I integrated an old dpmi version of an 16 bit linker into thinapps virtual environment.
With the help of friendly geldorp,
I used the solution to copy 'critical' old apps during startup of thinapp from vrtual filesystem to host filsystem (merged)
The virtualized Borland IDE of BC5.02 is now able to start an old fashioned DMPI-apps.
Outlook 2003 with Customization for Profile Autoconfigure
I'm fairly new to ThinApp and I am ThinApping Office 2003 right now.

General packaging went really well but I'm trying to make my package a little more useful by configuring Outlook to autoconfigure the user profile.

I installed Office 2003 with a transform that specifies the profile generation behavior.

After packaging and running outlook, Outlook tries to connect to the target exchange server and prompts for credentials. It doesn't accept any of the credentials provided and errors out.

The machine is on the correct domain and a valid user is logged in.

Any advice would be appreciated.

copy directory-structure from virtual-filesystem to host-filesystem
Hello,

I found post with a simoilar problem in post 'http://communities.vmware.com/thread/217891'.

Background:
I have to copy a directory with Its sub folders from the virtual filessystem to hosts file system.
I use the cmd-debug commandline and I give the target folder attribut 'merged':

Problem:
I call 'copy', 'mkdir' in the thin-bubble, both will work fine to copy files into host system, or create folders.
But if i try to use 'xcopy', this command break and give the message 'can't create the target folder'.
It's very strange, because the other to commandline tools will work.

Can anybody give an idea, why 'xcopy' won't work in thinapp-bubbles ?

Thank you in advanced

I don't think you can. Typically you would use the '\' backslash as an escape character to take the next one as a literal, but I think the backslash is not allowed for use in some Package.ini settings.

Regards,

EvilOne
Thanks for your respons leobissinget.

Wow, this seems to be a really hard work, especially If I'd like to deploy a complex application (e.g.Microsoft Server products) in this way.

And I don't know, how could I make a "fake" registry, to store the registry entries made by the program.

I just found a great website, the guys at http://www.portableapps.com are doing the same what I'am talking about, but this is seems to be a little indie project for me.

I know I used sbmerge correctly because changes I made to internet explorer which was also in the project worked.
Anyone have any ideas why Outlook can not be merged?

I think I have a solution - Give this a try:

Add the following ExternalDLL command in the BuildOption section of the package.ini file. There should already be the BuildOptions branch, so just
add the ExternalDLLS line somewhere in that section. Keep me posted on how it goes as this solved my issue.
Hi,

I've recently been attempting to thinapp an application that requires a reboot. I am doing this on a VMware workstation set to non persistent mode (meaning system changes are maintained during a restart). However, When i restart and login to the workstation, thinapp relaunches not at the post install point but at the beingging when the packager is first invoked. I was wondering if anyone else has seen this?

Problems virtualising SolidWorks 2009

It took some time but we managed to thinapp SolidWorks 2009 SP4.1 Premium.
Performance seems to be good.

How's that possible?:
Use a clean VM (or wathever you use to capture applications) with Win XP pro SP2.
Uninstall the VMware Tools (if you use a vm).
Install windows patch KB919880 (do not capture this one)
Use version 4.0.0.2200 of ThinApp.

Start Thinapp.
Install SW.
After the the installation has finished open the task manager.
Wait untill the mscorsvw.exe process (.NET Runtime Optimization Service) has finished.
Start SW and configure it as needed.
Don't select Add-in's!!!!!! (you can always do that when using the package, it will be stored in your sandbox)
Close SW.
Finish the capture.

Good luck!
Virtual Bubble with Internet Explorer - Flash Causes it to Freeze

Hello everyone.

I know this is a constant topic about how to correctly get a ThinApped package to interact with the Local installation of IE. I am having a problem with Flash, which is installed locally, when launching the IE in the ThinApp package. Any flash enabled website causes Internet Explorer to freeze.

I am not sure what to do.

The Machine which was used has IE 7 already, which is the same version on the target machine. Adobe 10 is installed on the target machine, flash works in the local IE.
Do I need to isolate some keys in the package? Should I just ThinApp Flash?

I should also say in the whole process of this, I also captured an installation of IE 7 from IE 6, along with Office 2007, and Flash works from the locally installed machine. I am not sure what the difference is. I guess I could also compare the registry keys between both projects, but that could take some time.

Thanks. I hope someone has some ideas.

I don't see the point of problems. Just try to ThinApp VMWare Converter with sandbox located in the same directory as executable (Portable Application) and try to run it.

IMHO you can not convert PC without admin credentials anyway, even you use non-ThinApped VMWare Converter.
Have you tried to look into Package.ini file for lines FileTypes? There are defined extensions that should be assigned with executables when registering app.

For examle for Word in Office 2003 I have there:

http://Microsoft Office Word 2003.exe
Source=%ProgramFilesDir%\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE
Icon=%SystemRoot%\Installer{9012041B-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}\wordicon.exe
FileTypes=.doc.dochtml.docm.docx.dot.dothtml.rtf.wbk
Shortcuts=%Programs%\Microsoft Office

And here is documentation.
Sentece that you posted means that parent application are not able to see changes in linked (child) application. It means that parent application are not able to access directly registries or files in sandbox of its child linked applications. But it doesn't mean, that child linked application work without its sandbox. It reads and writes to its sandbox like any other application.

Just a dump question, does it work without virtualization?
What if you do not do linked applications, but make one ThinApp package where you will capture your application and also Outlook?

Hi,

I'm pretty new to ThinApp, but have managed to ThinApp a good few "simple" applications so far. Now I'm trying to ThinApp Visual Basic 6 (I know: it's old, but I still have good use for it) but I've run into a problem there: creating the ThinApp'ed application goes well (with 4.0.3), but when I try to run it, it fails to load all VB's add-in components (OCX and DLL). Can someone help me out here to get this fixed?

Thanks,

ThinApp and Printing
I have packaged my application (in this case a business app. running under IE6) on a 'clean' Windows 2000 pc.

I am now wanting to host this ThinApp package on a XenApp Server (which has no connected printers).

What I want to happen is for the client who connects to the XenApp Server and accesses the ThinApp package to be able to print using those printers that are known on his / her client PC - but in the print dialog no printers are displayed ( As there are none installed on the server). Is there a way to get the ThinApp package in the XenApp environment to be able to print using the printers known to the client?

Many Thanks
a.) Yes, vApp has all access as normal app would have. That means, you can not decline access to network card within vApp.

b.) If you have such a software for normal app, it should work with vApp. ThinApp doesn't have such a tools.
ThinApping Corel Draw X4 | hide local folders

Hey guys!

Following: I'am working on a CorelDraw X4 ThinApp at the moment.
Packaging Process worked well.(Used a clean VM, newest ThinApp realease: 4.0.3-3313)
Now the Problem. If I want to use the Thinapp on a computer with MS Office 2003 installed, it tries to install something (process msi.exe starts, and you can see Office install assistant starting. but its not possible for the installer to install the required stuff) and then the application crashes.

I already tried installing this office on the virtual machine before packaging corel. but no effect...
I can only use the Isolation modes writecopy and merged. if thinapp it full, it wouldn't be possible to use other interfaces to existing applications..

I know that it is possible to hide local files from the thinapp (http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/2009/02/how-to-ignore-local-system-files-and-registry-entries-inside-a-thinapp-package.html)
but is it also possible to hide local folders from the thinapp? It's a bit more comfortable to hide single folders with the files included than every single file...

btw.. if you try using this thinapp on a machine without office installed, it is working perfectly (in addition Office as a thinapp works, but we have many applications with Macros and other installed interfaces to office i could not thinapp yet.
IE 8, .NET Framework
Hi to All,

I have been working on ThinApp'ing IE 8 and using .NET Framwork 3.5 as a plugin. .NET is only a .dat file in the plugin folder of IE 8, does there need to be an exe that uses the .dat file in the plug in folder? The Builder Wizard didn't pick an appropriate exe as an entry point, so I just left all unchecked and gav e it a name to use for the .DAT.....is there a particular exe that I should use as an entry point?

When I go to the page for the application, click on the Install button, a message displays that says >NET Setup Is Currently Disabled By Your Security Settings.

Thank you for any suggestions or help.

Office 2007 with IE - Crashes with Local Addon
Hey everyone.

I ThinApped Office 2007 and I put the iexplore.exe entry point in with the project as I need users to have the Office Settings in IE to open up Infopath documents in Sharepoint. When I did the catpure, I had IE 7 installed already as that is what we have deployed on the machines. The problem is that when you launch iexplore.exe on a VMWare View machine, it crashes on any site that has adobe flash. I was able to figure out that it is the VMWare Adobe Plugin, flashoptimizer.dll. When I disable this addon and launch the program, IE does not close.

What do I do in order to troubleshoot this/resolve it? I am somewaht new to ThinApp and this Local program launching in the Virtual Bubble still has me somewhat confused. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
the problems appear with some machine for the version without SP 1 or 2.

this problems exist because the windows installer search few registry key in the local machine. These key correspond of C++ runtime. but it's not install on the capture machine. I think that it is because I have VMware tools or View Agent installed on the capture machine, or maybe it's Thinapp...

but this is resolv with installation of Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (add in the wsus server )

I have not had time to test SP2, but maybe a complete installation of C++ package resolv also the probleme. or maybe the version 2008...

How do I troubleshoot ThinApp package when it crashes under LogMonitor?

The Problem :
I am trying to troubleshoot a ThinApp application package. The package has required links to Crystal Runtime 2008 SP1 and .NET Framework versions 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 SP1. The package runs successfully on a Windows XP SP2 machine, but on a Windows Vista SP1 machine, it crashes when trying to show a Crystal report in the viewer. The package was built with ThinApp 4.0.3.

My Troubleshooting Steps :
I copied the LogMonitor.exe and supporting dll's to a Windows Vista SP1 test client. When I started the application package, the log file becomes so large that the application failed to launch. I then checked the Suspend box in LogMonitor, and now when I launch the application package, it crashes immediately.

Some Relevant Notes :
I had built roughly the same package with ThinApp 4.0.1 trialware and did not run into this issue. The app packaged under 4.0.1 ran successfully under Windows XP and Vista machines. In both cases, I had built all packages on a VM Workstation running Windows XP SP2.

My Question :
How do I troubleshoot this?

Externalizing AppSync URL?

In our deployment model, we build ThinApp packages at our company and then deploy them out to different servers at customer intranet sites. We have been able to leverage the ThinApp scripting capability to externalize basically any file in the package. This allows us to build 1 core package, deploy it at multiple customer sites, and then just change any .config files outside of the package for each customer. This greatly simplifies the management of our packages, since we just need to build one version of the package and then can configure it per customer via configuration files.

We have been experimenting with the AppSync capability, and have found that it would be especially useful to externalize the AppSync URL in much the same way we can with our configuration files. This would open many doors for us in terms of flexible deployments. Namely, we could create a package at our company, test it internally by pointing to a local web server, then stage that package out to a customer site, and just update the AppSync URL to point to their customer web server. Another common scenario is that we will deploy a ThinApp package into a customer test environment, and then need to push the same package into the customer's live environment. We would like to be able to move the package from the test web server to the live web server, and just update the AppSync URL in the live environment to point to the live web server.

Is it possible to do this today with ThinApp? If this needs to be a feature request, where do I post it?

Why do You think that You get the standart system CMD?

Try to run CMD point (the main package must be beside of it) on the machine, where your application is not installed.
Then in CMD window: CD "path-to-program-files"
Then: DIR

After that you should see your application folder, but standard CMD can't see it.
If not then you've made something wrong.

"Thinapped" application for Windows XP and Vista
Hi Everybody,

I've already "thinapped" different kind of software. If I run application on the same OS, but not the with the same SP (the computer that I use for thinapp don't have SP), the software works fine.

If I test to run the application on Windows Vista, (or Seven), when I start the application, the error at the application startup appear "the application has stopped working".

When I create the package, I choose the Merged Isolation Mode. I'd know if somebody know more about the procedure for create an application compatible with two or more Windows OS versions.

Thank you for your help.
ThinApp Firefox slow respons
Something to add.

When I take the USB to my own PC, where Mozilla is being installed, and I start the ThinApp Mozilla,I see it starts, but now it is not slow.I notice that there is hardly any i/O to the USB.

I stop the ThinApp-application, deletes the prvious created sandbox files and directories and start the application again.

Same effect, fast, but the only files I see being created are the registry files. I'm was searching for the sandbox files on my own PC, but I could not find them.

For me this is very strange and confusing

Before I forget to mention, also on the PC where I packed Mozilla into a ThinApp application, during the test Mozilla was still installed on the Windows OS. I did not removed the installation

Another App Virtualization Solution Instead of ThinApp

Well, really depends what you have in your environment as far as virtualization infrastructures. If you have all VMware ESX hosts environment and uses VMware View, it would be obvious you're give ThinApp a chance because it's doing pretty good in terms of single execution and you have the apps running without conflicts and its so light and easy to deploy. Now, if you have Citrix XenEnterprise and Xen Desktop, than using XenApp would be your best choice and Citrix is actually the king in application virtualization before Softgrid and ThinApp has to offered. I still think Citrix XenApp has more features to offered but that depends on your assessments. Now, Microsoft luckily bought Softgrid and rebranded to App-V for their VDI solution such as MDOP. App-V is a great product as far as packaging and sequencing goes, its very good solution for application virtualization. Now, for those newbies on the block, why would you try something that's not mature and widely deployed?

So, I would check out our existing infrastructures and how we going forward, but using VMware, Citrix and MS application virtualization solutions are solid. Also, you would have to test them in a lab to decide which one works in your environment because each entity have their own and specific applications needs and requirements. I could see Symantec has some chances with this market but it takes time though! If you still interested in discussion with me offline call me anytime we can talk bro. I'm glad we have same last name so great to share knowledge!
how to maintain the thin app environment

Hello
My company start the deploy the thinapp and we package many applications like office, acrobat, sap and so on. I know vmware provide many tools to maintain the apps ,such as appsync, applinks. But I have many problem to maintain the whole thin environment
1. VMware recommend us to package every application in the "Clean" environment. Actuality, many applications interrelate each other. For example, IE browser. many our applications plug-in IE, If we package every application in "Clean" OS. the user may use different browser to run different app. and the standard IE can only browse the web, and always could not run plug-in apps.
2. To solve the first problem, we can simulate users environment to install all applications in the same OS, and finally re-package the IE with app link option. But this method will make the environment more complex and hard to maintain. Because a application change or update will impact other applications.
3. About update the application with app link option. A Scenario, I have packaged a Lotus notes called notes.dat and deploied to users in a month. now I want to config some setting. I have two way to update. First, capture the configurations and build a package called configuration.dat, then config the notes_v1's requireapplins to link to the configuration.dat in the package.ini, and rebuild the notes.dat. It's that right, I really didn't sure the two notes.dat are different package and use the same sandbox, it works? The second way, because of the config never change the execute file, there is no entry point to run the configuration.dat. So, we copy a same execute file of the notes as the entry point, and package the configuration.dat to link the notes.dat.

Anybody could share his experience in this, think you very much!

ThinApp and Kernel Drivers
I tried to virtualize an app that relies on a kernel driver to access a USB device that contains license information, Needless to say it won't work. Does anyone know of a work around is available for this kind of situation? We are not trying to and don't want to bypass any license requirements.

Thank you,

You are not alone in this. The use case that we tested is a little different. We tried to insert an excel file into powerpoint. All components of Office are virtual. I opened a SR and was told that the error is caused because thinAPP doesn't support OLE. The support engineer also indicated that VmWare does not have any plans to support OLE in the near future.
