If they were in a database, then we are talking about something much more in depth. This would require database pointers for the room and desktop names. (all depending on how the patient database works)
The event apparently has been cancelled

Although the ks09.org website is still up & advertising this for August 12-14, 2009, the organizers web site ServerWranglersGuild.com currently has this message posted:

It is with great regret that I inform you that the KnowledgeShare09: Virtualization event has been canceled.

Registered attendees need to contact Kalahari resorts directly to either cancel your reservations or make other arrangements.

Our sincere thanks to all our sponsors and attendees and our apologies for the cancelation.
VCB and TSM

vcbmounter will only allow once session (vcbmounter to execute) at a time. So, all vcb backups must occur serially (one after another). I do not know if this is a hardware or software limitation.

So, what we do is run vcbmounter to export all our guests to their respective directories. Then, we run the "subst" command to assign drive letters to the various directories. Finally, we kick off two TSM backups to put the vcb images to tape. The "subst" of directories for drives allows us to put our backups on different tapes so during a restore we avoid tape contention. Overall, it works great.

Here's the latest version of the Site Recovery Manager Offline Demo.

Unzip to a directory and run the executable. If you press 'F1' during the demo you can see the prompts and when you click on the red boxes that will show up, it will fill in the required information.

Sorry for the delay on getting this uploaded.

Future meeting Topics

Based on the open discussion at the end of the last meeting I think a lot of people would like to hear about ESX deployment, things like

How to configure your SAN, size of UNs, how many disks per LUN, how many virtual machines per LUN, LUN configuration for different applications (SQL, Web, etc.)

How to identify bottlenecks on your ESX servers

Sizing of virtual machines (CPU count, memory size) to avoid overcommitment or negative overcommitment.

How to setup network cards in ESX servers for best performance and redundancy

etc.

I think some best practice meetings would be beneficial to all to get a solid ESX understanding across our user group and then start getting into the more advanced things like DRS, DPM, HA, SRM, etc.

VMUG Schedule for 2008 and 2009
Sorry for the late notice. Unfortunately, I was not able to get things lined up for the meeting that should have taken place today. I also wasn't able to set things up until our next meeting. However, we did decide at our last meeting to go with a monthly schedule (see below). So, the next meeting will be February 12th at TCU with a talk on Virtual Center and ESX and best practices. This should be a good overview of VI3 and prepare us for the new version coming out with all of the changes.

Feb. 12
Mar. 12
Apr. 9
May 14
June 11
July 9
Aug. 13
Sept. 10
Oct. 8
Nov 12

The goal is to have the meeting on the second Thursday on the odd months of the year.
Where are you from?

Hi everyone, I just joined the VMUG. Unfortunately I missed the meeting.

My name is Chris Peden and I am an independant Technology Consultant with many clients in the Michiana area. I have been using VMware in testing environments for years and with the push virtualization has been making I am going to be doing more production virtualization including an exchange 2003 server here in the next week. I use Windows, Mac's, Unix (BSD and Solaris) and have dabbled with linux. I personally use Fusion, Server, and ESXi in my home office.

Some random facts: I like to cook, and I attend GCC.

I look forward to being part of the group and helping make it a success.

Link to Microsoft document on Datacenter server licensing
Here is the link to the Microsoft document on Datacenter server licensing.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/news/bulletins/datacenterhighavail.mspx

This is the relevant portion:

Unlimited virtualization rights: Starting October 1, 2006, new servers licensed with Windows Server Datacenter Edition (and previous licenses with new version rights) will have license rights to run an unlimited number of virtualized Windows Server instances. By simply licensing the server's processors with Windows Server Datacenter Edition, customers will be able to run Windows Server Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, Datacenter Edition or a mix of the three editions without having to track the number of virtual machines or pay for additional Windows Server licenses.

Licensing does not depend on which virtualization technology is used. With all processors in a server licensed for Windows Server 2003 R2, Datacenter Edition, you can run one instance of the software in a physical operating system environment and an unlimited number of instances in virtual operating system environments. With VMWare GSX Server or SWsoft Virtuozzo, this means you can run one physical instance plus unlimited virtual instances. With VMWare ESX Server, it means you can run unlimited virtual instances because there is no need for a physical instance.

Meeting Survery Results and next meeting

Here are the post meeting survey results that I thought we could use a a beginning of discussion and planning for future meetings. For the next meeting, we'll have a vendor speak on VDI since we'vre already been planning since the last meeting, after that meeting we'll have a user case story meeting (any volunteers? - maybe we'll talk about Virtual Center / ESX 3.5 then as well) and after that, based on the results below, we'll see about having a vendor speak about Disaster Recovery and/or Virtual Center / ESX 3.5

We're looking for voluneteers to host the next meeting. TCU is willing to host the next meeting but doesn't have to. Coachman is willing to host in Middlebury. We'd be looking at the dates of July 10th, 17th or 24th at 6 pm. Sean O'Meara from Xcedex will talk about Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. If you're willing to host, check that you can and then e-mail me.

Vendor Guidelines
I think a discussion should be had on the difference between a "Vendor" and a "VMware Partner / Reseller."

In my mind a "Vendor" is a company like Equallogic, Dell, Vizioncore, Bladelogic, etc. Whereas a "VMware Partner" is more like New Age Technologies, Xcedex or Berbee.

With that in mind, I totally agree that a "Vendor" should have to bring a client or a case study. Additionally, I believe the time limits are great to keep "Vendor's" from pitching their new products. However, I believe "Partners" should be held as a technical resource and help answer questions. By all means, "Partners" should also help defer the costs of the meetings. Yet, at the same time they should be prevented from giving any kind of sales pitch. We all come to these meetings to learn more about VMware, not to get bombarded with people trying to sell us VMware.

It is also very important to note that I am a VMware Partner. I love user group meetings and I would be willing to tape my mouth shut in order to ensure that I could still attend them.

Just my thoughts.
