Where to learn about VMware products?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I can go to find more information on Vmware products, such as more in depth information on things like HA and Vmotion and just all of the infastructure products in general?

See Scott links, and also VMware site for specific technology's documents:
http://www.vmware.com/products/high-availability/
http://www.vmware.com/products/vmotion/

Also if you working for a VMware partner, you can find a lot of documentation in Partner Network and Partner University.
Once all the courses are available, expect VATCs like the one I work for to do some "bundling"....
I'd certainly like to teach a course like the one you have in mind! I have a lot of say at my VATC as to how we package these sorts of courses together - I'll bear your idea in mind
Partner or VMware direct?
Hi,

I took the course and enjoyed it. I booked through VMware direct, but it was hosted by a partner. (so I guess I had no choice)

The hours are very long and although I am sure I learnt more than I would in Install and configure, I am not entirely sure that I learnt enough extra to justify the very long hours.

we were on the beta and had VMware sit in for feedback etc . . and it seemed to me that they were not really aiming the course at experienced Admins that wanted to learn Extra . . rather at inexperienced admins with a high work ethic . .wanting to learn more than Install COnfigure Manage would teach them.

I'd say it is worth 20% more than Install Configure and Manage, based on what you learn and a comparison of the syllabus notes.

Has anyone done these VMware certifications - VSP - VTSP

Also for "normal" partner are useful, cause there are (from last month) new requirements for partner programs.
I agree that are not really certification but "simple" accreditation.
But some VTSP courses are quite interesting also for a VCP. For example the HA module is very well explained.
VMware Authorized Training Center

The requirements you most concern is your physical training lab that you have enough hosts and SAN for the students and two of them assign to hosts/SAN for the lab for the instructors just required two VCI on board and all gears/labs must be certified and bound to VMware educations standards which you will receive from VATC manager. Things might change lately but that's pretty standard info!
Welcome to the Customer Education forum

Hi Brian,

My name is John Dineen. I run a specialist search engine for training called learnpipe - Our aim is to make searching for all training courses much, much easier.

VMware / fusion / virtualisation / etc. are very really search terms on learnpipe. We have lots of vendors on learnpipe who offer vmware training. However, to strengthen our results still further, we would like to pull event / course / providers details directly from VMware.

I've been reviewing the Education section on VMware.com. The data that we require is there. However, I don't see a feed or api option that would enable us to pull data from you.

Can we pick this up over email?: john@learnpipe.com

regards, John

VMWARE VIEW Delivery

Make sure you speak with your VMware contact. He or she will discuss with you the requirements to ramp up for teaching the VMware View course.

In my personal opinion, the old VDM 2 course will help you with some aspects of preparation but not all. The VDM 2 course goes into much more detail on Windows domain and remote-desktop technologies than does the newer View course. The View course treats those as having already been mastered by instructor and students, and they are listed as course prerequisites.

However, the VMware View product family, as well as the View course, is bigger than just VDM. The old course focused on the VMware connection broker, VDM 2. But VMware View contains three parts: the new connection broker (called View Manager 3), a solution for saving disk space on desktop images (View Composer), and application virtualization (ThinApp). You'll see a continuity between VDM 2 and View Manager 3, but a VCI may need to learn View Composer and ThinApp from square one.

I also get to pick a conference to attend, so VMworld is already on my list. It looks like it is in San Francisco for 2009, I really wish it was in Vegas again. I'm interested in going to the DSA class, but I feel I can get the same material from Tim Cerling's "Mastering VMware Infrastructure 3" and Scott Herold, Ron Oglesby, and Mike Laverick's "VMware Infrastructure 3: Advanced Technical Design Guide and Advanced Operations Guide (No. 3)". I would like to find something that's maybe the "meca" of virtualization training. I'd like to get something that's a little mixed with Linux since I need to brush up on that. I also went to a SRM user group meeting here in Houston. It is a pretty cool product, but I have not been able to convince my employer that it would be the right choice for our DR soulution. There is a silly political battle going on at the moment on who is going to control the deisgn of DR for the company, so i'm not sure SRM would be the right fit for me right now.

VMWare training

As he said, there are benefits. If you want to go self taught, pretty much all of the cbt's out there are pretty decent. You can also install ESX into workstation and put it all on a single computer, so you essentially (if your hardware is decent enough) can create an ESX farm, including storage and use the demo ESX software to do everything you need to do in a production environment. Install workstation, into that install 2 esx servers, one nfs server, and put virtual center on your workstation, and you're ready to prep for anything. That's the cheap way out, classes are expensive, and don't try to be cheap there...If you're going to do the class, do the vmware class, that way you can get certified(to be certified, you are required to have the class from vmware).
As kyle pointed out the CBT will introduce you to the terms which will be a big help - the labs will be part of the weeks activities independent of the instructor because it is part of the class delivery. You are also correct that labs will only be accessable during the week of training becasue every weekend they get rebuilt for the following weeks of classes -
Is there any way to get discounts for training courses?
Sounds like all you're missing is the hands-on experience. I've been working with ESX for a little over 2 years, and administering it for the past 12 months. I took the fast track in August of 08 and wouldn't recommend it for the price - all we really covered that I hadn't discovered on my own was some of the advanced command line tools. I don't know about discounted training courses, I guess it would depend on your reseller.

I'd recommend dusting off your old books from the Install & Config class, grabbing a 60 day eval of VI3, and have some fun with it. Aside from the hand-on work, know the config maximiums guide (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35u2/vi3_35_25_u2_config_max.pdf) - that's good info you won't come across playing with a test lab.

Good luck on your exam!

Hi Brain,

brianriceca wrote:

But is there any difference between taking this course online or attend a class?Live-online deliveries of our instructor-led courses have the same content as do in-person deliveries. The primary advantage of live-online classes is that they do not require travel; the primary advantage of in-person classes is that they provide a structured time that's shielded from work-related or personal interruptions. Another reason why people like open-enrollment deliveries in particular is that they give opportunities to meet other VMware customers and compare notes about experiences. (Although students do interact with one another during live-online deliveries, sometimes there's no substitute for having lunch with people!)

already i have got 3 years Hands-on Experiance with Virtualization specially ESX Server.

However, the course is not specifically keyed to the contents of the VCP examination. So if you are primarily looking for a course that will help you prepare for the examination, VI3: I&C would be the better choice.

Yes, what I'm looking is to prepare for the VCP examination. As a begining will start with the VI3: I&C as you suggested. Now, I have already registered for the course to be given online Instructer-Led.

I hope next time will be having the opportunity to meet other people by attending in-person course.

Best Regards,

Why does VMware refuse to educate their customers ?

Hi Brian

shame on me - I really missed your answer from 1 april - sorry

But here's my question for you, Ulli and Oliver. Imagine that VMware produced, for each of its products, a really good document called "Troubleshooting productname".
It would contain all the under-the-surface detail that you'd need to troubleshoot this product: vmx file flags, important log file messages, etc.
Would that be good enough? I claim no.

Well - I guess you simply don't have the manpower to write such "a really good document".
Very likely it would be outdated when it appears ..
The really tricky problems occur when unexperienced users work with your products - you can't write those troubleshooting guides you mentioned before the product meets the public I guess.

I think that only a small number of folks is really interested in "hard core" troubleshooting - when I remember the times Petr was visiting VMTN only a few guys were listening to him like to a teacher.
IMHO this was a pretty cost-effective way of support for your company.
Folks like Oliver, Rob , me and many others learned a lot - now we continue the work in VMTN or by running trouble-shooting websites like http://sanbarrow.com/vmdk/vmdk-when-its-too-late.html

Its a pity that this channels are closed nowaday - I also don't think its clever.
I guess I followed Petr through maybe 5 snapshot-repairs - in the following times I solved hundreds of this problems on my own - and have told lots of other how to help themselves.

Brian - every bit of information that you give to use - reduces your support-work ten and hundredfolds.
Why are you so closed ?
Bring back some teachers - or at least some folks who answer our technical questions ...

Such a document would help with the product's supportability, but it would be a total surrender on the product's self-supportability.
Isn't it reasonable for people to expect to be able to troubleshoot most problems using the normal GUI they do all their other work in? Imagine that your Mercedes had no fuel gauge.
To measure the amount of fuel left in the tank, you would need to stop the car and insert a dipstick into the fuel tank. Our friends in Stuttgart would never accept this compromise.

Hmm - that comparison doesn't match I think - I thought we were talking about a level of troubleshooting deeper than the service you get in a gas-station.
I guess users don't expect that they can recover their data after a systemcrash using the GUI.
Like if the gasoline is empty they go to a gas-station (GUI) - if they have a flat tyre they go to a garage in the neighborhood.

Brian - Oliver, Rob, me and folks like us do the garage-work - if you help us - you help yourself

If I had a budget of $X, how much should I spend on self-supportability features, and how much should I spend on writing new troubleshooting documents?

What about a third option ? - spend some money for trouble-avoiding education.Take an example - the tricky part in snapshot-repair on hosted platforms is the fact that you have to hexedit in the default case.
Setting a user-friendly default would be very cheap - compared with writing docs on how to safely hexedit ...

By the way - I like your idea of a VM-comparing tool

Sorry for late reply

Ulli
best book for CLI

There are some command references at :

http://pubs.vmware.com/vi35/server_config/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=server_config&file=sc_appa.20.1.html

I'm not sure that I've ever seen one book that has the command line stuff in one location I will say the the VMware DSA class has quite a bit of the command line as part of the automation portion of the class.
