A logical cpu is where the virtual cpu is scheduled - it could be a physical CPU, core or HT -
Which is proper: VCP or VCP4

I suppose that is a valid question. If you have passed the VCP exam (which can be verified on the VUE site), and you have taken an authorized class, you can be pretty sure you are certified. The only time this is not the case is if:

1. You took the exam and the exam center reports that you conducted activity during the exam that might invalidate your results
2. You took the class but did not fully attend and were marked incomplete

You can always e-mail certification@vmware.com and request your VCP ID, which can be used to verify your status.

The Install Configure Manage and Fast Track training courses both have a few notes on VCB, and do compare VCB and Data Recovery. I would advise that knowledge would be useful for the VCP4 exam. I'm not saying you need to know about how to "do VCB", just know a few facts about it and how it compares to Data Recovery.
VCP4 Exam Scheduling
Thanks. That is exactly why I was asking. I wasn't sure if I would qualify for the free re-take if I had scheduled the exam without meeting the requirements - and I was thinking that if the vmware site didn't reflect my account as having passed the exam, I wasn't sure if I would be considered as meeting them..

Now, it seems like it will be no problem to get the code and register for the exam. I definitely want to take it before the end of the year, and since I'm managing a vSphere environment and just passed the VCP3 exam, I don't believe I'll be having much trouble (though the free re-take is a great incentive to try before studying very hard). Thanks again.

Have my VCP3, going for VCP4 before 31/12/09. Does VMware know that I'm eligible?

Matt, you meet the eligibility for VCP4 if you pass the exam before the end of the year, go for it. VMware are running a free re-take for the VCP4 exam, also until the end of the year, register for your code through vmware.com/certification.
VCP + Support Status

Hey, I don't mean to drum up an old post but I fully agree with you. I have had to contact tech support 3 times so far and only once were they even able to help me. As a sidenote, the one time they helped me was when I first started with vSphere and didn't know how to fix a problem. I was not yet a VCP or anywhere close to one. Now, being more familiar with VS4 I've had to call twice with issues and I ended up working with tech support for weeks and eventually resolved the issues my self. At one point I had the tech support person and his manager on the line and I could hear her in the background saying "I don't know, this is different than the old version... <long pause> I don't know".

I understand that training is important and it is how they learn. I did send the tech support person a detailed email telling him how I went about fixing my issue. It just would have been nice if I could go right to a Tier 2 or 3 person instead of screwing around for over a week.

Not quite true - the Troubleshooting course is still being finalised and should be released in the next month or so.

The Design and Scripting & Automation courses are still in development, they should both be released in the first few months of 2010.
Finally passed my VCP4! 2 full weeks solid study, buldging disc and numb thumb but I did it!!!!
Thank you Scott for your insight.

I've actually gone a more primative route and used two motherboards from Intel that have the Atom CPU's! Talk about a poor man's Environment. The motherboard is nice because it's fanless and the Atom CPU is 2 core. It actually works pretty well for me for my DiscCloud environment as the DC VM's don't require much memory (1Gb each) and I can easily over-subscribe the memory and get a small vSphere playground set up very quickly and very low cost (D945GCLF2 motherboards can be found for as low as $85) I'll try to put some detail on my metaflo.ning.com blog site about it.

The main reason I hate to mention ESX on atom it is that one needs to muck around w/ the ESXi configuration files in order to get ESXi to work correctly with the on-board NIC. Once I got that working, it comes right up and runs quite well.

The second reason I hate to mention it is that currently, these motherboards (D945GCLF2) are limited to only 2GB of memory but Intel is about to release a newer model that will handle up to 4GB - still a bit limited for Window's VMs but it works perfectly for my DC VM's environment for Mac.

Club 400+ what is it? Anyway, I'm in... VCP 410 passed today with score of 400

Hello 400 people *g,

I passed my VCP on 22nd of october with 494 points. A nearly clear run and 4 weeks of hard studying (big thks to Scott for helpful infos for preparing).

After completing the training I decided to put the course books away and studying the actual admin, FC, ISCSI, ressource and "maximus" config guide.
I also read many white papers regading VSWITCH (especially Std. vs Distributed switches)

The V-Ref card was also my daily "newspaper" on my way to work and back home, a really good ressource when talking about VSPHERE in my opinion.

If anyone is still preparing for the exam I recommend to install and configure VSPHERE several times, configure HA as well as ressource pools and also take a look on Data recovery as well as "sleep" with the guide of VSwitch *g (most of the 85 questions are "switched" ones)

I was surprised that there were not so many questions (maybe 5) about config limits

To all people who are passed with less than 400 points : it does not really count and a VCI is not made of 400+ points, a pass is a pass, that counts

Best regards from Germany

Candidates who pursue and obtain the VCP4 certification will receive Workstation 7 licenses, once we have finished the internal process required to obtain those licenses we will get them out.

This is the reason for the VCP4 welcome kit delay?
Nearly there?
You might or might not have to attend a course, here are your choices:

1. If you get your VCP3 now, you will get your VCP4 before the end of 2009 if you pass the VCP4 exam - no What's New course attendance required, you could self-study.

2. If you get your VCP3 now, and don't pass the VCP4 exam before the end of 2009, you will HAVE to attend at least the What's New course and pass the VCP4 exam to get your VCP4.

3. If you don't do the VCP3 exam, you will HAVE to attend at least the What's New course and pass the VCP4 exam to get the VCP4 - either now in 2009 or into 2010.

And by "at least the What's New course", I mean you also have the option of attending Install Configure Manage, or the Fast Track courses for vSphere. It's up to you when you sit the VCP4 exam, you could do it before the What's New course, but would you benefit from the course if you already had your VCP4?
The VCP4 exam has 85 questions, you have 90 minutes, the exam is not adaptive, and you need to get a score of 300 or better to pass.

VCP3 will not lose its validity -- "just" its usefulness.

E.g. for a specific partner level (enterprise, premier) a company needs a number of VCPs. This will need to be VCP4s after a grace period. I think the exact numbers and dates depend on your region.

If you use your VCP creds to impress customers or would-be employers, VCP3 will obviously gradually lose its luster.
See my earlier replies in this thread. If you want to work for a VATC, contact those in your area. If you want to work on a freelance/contract basis, you will need to contact VMware Education. Passing the VCP4 exam with a score of 350 or more is just the start.

You will need to be ready and able to deliver the vSphere: Install Configure Manage course to a certain standard, you will need to attend a VCI Workshop run by VMware where they will assess you.
To download them you need a user and a password.
If you do not have a valid one (especially for VC), you can evaluate View 3 and you will have also a key for VI 3.5
VMware vSphere 4: Install, Configure, Manage Class
Hey folks,

I just took the vSphere 4 class and thought I'd give a shout out to the teach, Brian Lewis. Brian's a great teacher. He actually taught me Unix / Linux 11 years ago through the U of M Unix / C / C++ Certification course, and made the light bulb go on over my head when I had trouble learning KSH shell scripting. Back then he put on a Saturday class, on his own time, which about 5 of us attended. Small world, great teacher. I never expected to bump into him as a teacher of VMware (he was a SCO Ace when SCO was cool, and in pre-litigation pre-bankruptcy phase).

Similar to 11 years ago, he made the light bulb go on over my head for VMware (a hardened Unix - Linux veteran). Anyone who can speak kindly about both Windows and Unix - Linux is a treasure (an equal opportunity OS supporter is rare). If you (VMware management folks) let him leave you in the future (not saying it will happen), it's your loss, because he’s a keeper.

To anyone else wondering about taking this class, and is a total VMware noob like myself (my class was filled with seasoned Windows / VMware admins), I highly recommend it. Me myself, I'm certified on Solaris and Red Hat and have admin'ed HP-UX, Solaris, Red Hat, SuSE, AIX, Unixware, and Tru64. I was genuinely impressed with the depth and breadth of what VMware can do (it'll be interesting to see a match up between Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and VMware and whether RHEV can stack up to vSphere 4). Brian taught the class without any bias, showing me a great tip on how to edit the /etc/vmware/hostd/authorization.xml file to fix broken VMware root perms (gotta love the command line, and VMware is running a heavily modified RHEL kernel after all).

Trivia question for the masses: Why is VMware running a RHEL modified kernel? Take Brian's class to find out if you don't know the real answer.

Cheers,
VCP Study Environment?
Jason,

My study environment was a MacMini 2,1 1.83GHz and a MacBook 5,1 2GHz - both with 2GB RAM.

While this was bearly usable due to the lack of RAM, it did work (I passed my VCP).

I found a marked performance improvement once I upgraded to Fusion 3.

Another big issue was disk latency, so don't skimp on the drives and/ or use external storage.

One advantage of running a Windows laptop as mentioned above is the ability to run the vSphere client locally - but if you get desperate you could run Windows natively on your Mac under bootcamp.

HTH
Hi Andre,

The plan is for some of those 1-2 day courses to be "bundled" together into the Advanced course that Jon mentioned in his reply. I don't expect this to happen until into Q1 2010, as some of the individual courses that will make up this Advanced course are not due for release until then. From Jon's reply, it sounds like this Advanced course will also qualify you for VCP4.

I was more interested in obtaining the VCP ID # since my employer is looking for it so that the sales folks can get authorized at a higher partner level.

This could take other extra time.
Create you user in Partner Network under the right partner.
Then when you have the VCP# ask at Certification@vmware.com to bind it to your account.
Newbie Help Required Regarding Which Course To Take
As you currently meet neither of the requirements (attend official course, pass exam) for either the VCP3 or VCP4, I would forget VCP3 and go straight for VCP4.

To get your VCP4 via the VCP3 route you will have to attend a VI3 course, pass the VCP3 exam, and pass the VCP4 exam, all before 31st December 2009, or you will also have to attend at least the 2-day vSphere What's New course if you don't do it in time before the end of the year. If you forget the VCP3, and just worry about getting VCP4, you will have to attend either the vSphere ICM or Fast Track courses (as per my earlier reply) and pass the VCP4 exam - and the incentive to do those things in 2009 is the free re-take currently available for the VCP4 exam.

Send me a private message through the forum, and I can try and get you a deal on the vSphere courses
I would definitely recommend some additional hands-on, particularly as you don't get to use the software regularly where you work.

As others have said, you can download ESX and vCenter, and use them in evaluation mode for 60 days. You also have the option of running a full vSphere lab in virtual machines using a high-spec PC and VMware Workstation - there is a paper over at xtravirt.com which will help.
Certification

Does anyone have any thoughts on this, are there any Vmware courses that can be done online etc

At this this you can take two VCP certification: VCP310 or VCP410.

Both require a related official course (and you have to spend some money depending on the course) and both require also to pass a exam (also with a "little" fee).

Couse VCP310 exam could be retired, you can start directly with VCP410 exam.

Official documentation:
http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vs_pages/vsp_pubs_esx40_vc40.html

The official Blueprint is available at:
http://mylearn.vmware.com/lcms/mL_faq/2726/VCPonvSphere4ExamBlueprint.pdf
Some version with study notes:

Apparently you can't pay for your exam with credits and use the 2nd chance voucher?

Seems not possible using web: both are using a voucher during the exam payment, but you can put only one voucher.
Maybe with a telephone booking it could possible.

What does this mean 'configure service console availability'?

This question could also be related to VMware HA... without 'service console availability' you could have a warning and also HA could not work well if you loose a link.
Related to HA, the solution could also be different than using NIC teaming, for example could simple be 'add another service console/management interface'.
