how to share the serial port between vwmare and host operating system??

Vmware Player 3 doesn't compile modules on Ubuntu Studio 9.10

There's some bad karma for this system and Ubuntu with this release.

After the installation of the bundle and launching Vmware Player, the modules building fail for vmnet and some other components. I've seen a patch for a previous version of the player on RT Kernels, but I'm yet to find a fix for this one.

This is an Ubuntu Studio 9.10 i386 with the released 2.6.31-9-rt kernel running on an Asus A8Js.

Here's some output from the console when launching vmplayer, I'm attaching also the log and the complete output for further analysis:
Win7 + VMware Player - install of VMware NetAdapters disables Win7 internet access
I typically don't recommend dual booting as it takes time and kills access to one OS (not to mention the convenience of moving your VMs from host to host). As for your networking issue, you should have at least 3 adapters in there: 1 physical connection (WiFi, ethernet, whatever) and then the two VMware networks. Your host should be using the regular network connection, but can connect to the VMs if they are on VMnet 8 with the approriate IP. You shouldn't need Internet Connection Sharing enabled if the VM is connected via NAT or Bridged modes, as those share the currently "hot" network connection the host is using.

Are you saying that your host can't go online, but your VM is able to? It looks like you might have tried making adjustments that, in the end, weren't necessary. Do you recall all the steps you took while trying to get this working?

3D Acceleration in Linux Guest?

http://thefinalzone.blogspot.com/2009/09/gnome-shell-useless-with-nouveau-driver.html
http://www.kirsle.net/blog.html?id=66
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell
The first two links are random posts from people (one of whom was running linux on vmware) runnling linux without 3D acceleration trying to run the new
Gnome-Shell. The last is from the project itself, which states that they intend to make Gnome-Shell the default interface in GNOME-3.0 and that it will be a compositing manager (which to me implies 3d capability).

It should be noted, so I don't get flamed or anything, that gnome says that it will keep support for it's 2.x branch (which does not require 3D) for as long as they feel they need to. I would assume that in the absence of 3d support in commercial environments, that this (using the 2.x branch) may be what RHEL and Novell decide to do for the time being.

Shared writable mmap detection

Hello,

after about 10 years of development of hosted products, it`s hard to believe that recent linux version of vmware player crashes/segfaults when a vmdk is stored on a filesytem without shared writeable mmap support, as it is the case with FUSE based filesystems very often. i`d wonder if workstation 7 is different here....

what is so hard to add a detection routine ?
and why does player crash at all here?

crashing means, that exceptions not being handled properly.

sigh

Unable to install VMware tools in Win7 guest - connecting to update server (with no response)

FTC,
thanks for the reply. I uninstalled player and then installed workstation with tools eval to get tools into virtual machine using the included .iso.

Then I uninstalled workstation and reinstalled player. But of course, if I select "reinstall tools" it does the same thing.

It occurs on a wired and wireless connection.

I am not using a proxy.

I can get to internet on both guest and host.
Right, but if the XP machine isn't forwarding your credentials, then the authentication will never happen via the LDAP server. This happens all the time when that one setting is enabled, but I think this is a process management issue.
Virtualbox VDI file to Vmware

I'm using Virtualbox 2.1.4
and want to convert a VDI file to load it in Vmware (vmplayer 3.0.0
build-197124 on Vista Home Premium).

I think we can change the vdi-Format to vmdk with a tool provided by virtualbox.

VBoxManage clonehd /vboxdata/old.vdi /vmwaredata/new.vmdk -format VMDK
Its also possible to get the vmdk file by this :

qemu-img.exe convert -O vmdk hdd.vdi hdd.vmdk
But this does not generate the vmx file . How to get that ?

Just for information ,the vmware converter 4.0.1 says that the supported backup images or third-party virtual machines are:

Microsoft VirtualServer 2005

Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 or 2007

Parallels Desktop 2.5, 3.0 or 4.0 for Mac

VMware Consolidated Backup

Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 6.5, 7.0, 8.0

Symantec LiveState Recovery 3/6

Norton Ghost versions from 9 to 14

Acronis True Image Backup

ShadowProtect Desktop, Server, SBS,

IT, etc versions from 2.0 to 3.2

Trying to connect to vmware ESX 3.5 with VmWare player 3 on ubuntu

Hi,

OK, I've just installed VMware player 3 on a mandriva 2009.1 box of mine and I see pretty much the same problems as you are reporting.
It works indeed with VMware Server, but don't click on the menu item "VM Settings" or player will crash with

NOT IMPLEMENTED /build/mts/release/bora-203739/bora/apps/lib/cui/vmStatusVIM.cc:695

And if I try to connect to an ESX 3.5U4 host I get the errors:

Unable to connect to the MKS: Internal error.
Unable to connect to the MKS: MKS ticket acquisition was disallowed at the time of scheduled invocation.

So it appears to me that this functionality is indeed broken.
The only solution I see at this moment is to uninstall VMware Player 3 and install Player 2.5.3.
It is a bit of a catch-22 advice as you then probably get issues getting the kernel modules compiled on a current desktop linux.

As for the Alt-Ctrl keys now working properly with the vmrc I think that is a ubuntu issue which has work arounds. I don't have an ubuntu box around anymore, but there's posts on the keyboard issues.
Try this:
http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2008/11/19/vmware-workstation-ubuntu-ctrl-alt-ins-not-working/
and
http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2008/12/01/vmware-workstation-ubuntu-and-unity/

Oh and I'll update my document Web Access with what you've found.
Thanks for the report.
Unfortunately, this does not seem to be sufficient for Windows 7 - it solves the identification problem (stops complaining about "Nework not identified"), but it still does not seem to get an IP address from the VMWare Player.

VMWare Player was configured to use NAT (was unable to bridge). Any ideas are welcomed!

:edit: command line in Windows 7 %ipconfig /renew

fails saying that DHCP server does not answer - it seems that (finally) Windows7 tries to get the IP address, but the VMWare DHCP server does not oblige.

Thanks,

Mouse focus problem

Hello:

I'm using Player 2.5.3 build-185404 hosted on Server 2003 with a config.version 8/virtualHW.version 7 VM running XP SP3. The VM has VMWare Tools 7.8.5 build-156735 installed.

I run dual monitors and the VM is on a secondary monitor maximized. Whenever I close a window on my main monitor and focus automatically shifts to VMWare Player, my cursor moves away from the main monitor and back to the secondary.

This behavior never occurred under Player 2.0.5 build-109488 and config.version 8/virtualHW.version 3 before I used Converter 4.0.1 build-161434 to upgrade.

How can I change the mouse driver to have the old behavior?

Drivers:
HID-compliant mouse driver: 5.1.2600.0 Instance id: HID\VID_0E0F&PID_0003&MI_00\8&3460D90F&0&0000
HID-compliant mouse driver: 5.1.2600.0 Instance id: HID\VID_0E0F&PID_0003&MI_01\8&BF62B46&0&0000
VMware Pointing Device driver: 12.4.0.2 Instance id: ACPI\PNP0F13\4&5289E18&0

I noticed there is a new usb device for mouse that was not there before in the vmx file.
usb:0.deviceType = "mouse"

The old VM only has VMware Pointing Device driver: 12.0.0.0. Could I possibly remove the mouse entry in the vmx and revert to the old behavior? There's also:
usb:1.deviceType = "hub"

VM Player 3.0 Windows 7 host, XP Guest. Ultimate Race Pro won't work

I know this is a bit of a long shot, but was wondering if anyone might be able to help with the following problem:
I have just installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on my PC. One of our favourite games - Ultimate Race Pro will not install. This was originally written for Windows 95 and DirectX 5!! It runs fine on Windows XP. So I installed VM Player 3.0, and built an XP virtual machine. Ultimate Race Pro installs fine, and runs. However, after clicking to start a race - when I guess the program starts to use the 3D graphics acceleration, the XP guest completely freezes up, and the only thing to do is shut it down. I've tried disabling DirectX in the game, disabling 3D acceleration for the VM etc, but still no luck. My next plan is to create a new virtual machine with Windows 98, but I suspect that won't work either. Anyone have any suggestions?
My PC has the following specifications:
AMD 4800e, 4GB RAM, ATI 3450 graphics card with hybrid Xfire using the gpu on the motherboard (785G).

If I can't get it to work, can anyone suggest a good multiplayer LAN game suitable for playing with my kids (i.e. not lots of killing!).
Many thanks,
Ah, it has to do with Shared Folders between the guest and host. I caught a glimpse of the title over the progress bar this time, and could see that it stated something about copying a file that I had recently (in terms of minutes) copied to the host. The issue occurred this time when I started Netbeans, very strange. Could it be something was cached and starting Netbeans caused the shared folder stuff to flush?
Does VMware Player 3.0 require VT?

Almost all 64-bit AMD CPUs (except for the very earliest ones) support segment limit checks in 64-bit mode. This allows the virtual machine monitor to share a single virtual address space with the guest OS, yet still protect itself from the guest OS without the overhead of page-level protection. Segment protection for the virtual machine monitor is crucial to the success of our binary translation technology.

No 64-bit Intel CPU supports segment limit checks in 64-bit mode. Therefore, we can't use binary translation with 64-bit guests on Intel hardware.

512 MB is too low for Windows 7. Recommended value is 1 GB and optimal is around 2 GB. (CPU speed on host also matters)

Try increasing the RAM allocated to the VM and see it helps.
Vmplayer 3's library shows items twice
No i don't. Sometimes I would have them open at the same time by mistake.

But mostly it's one or the other.

Strangely enough just the opposite was happening before I upgraded to Player 3. With player two when i open a vm it did not remember it so the library had no entries. This behaviour started in ubuntu 9.10 only.

I delete the entries that continumm told me to delete but the problem persisted. So i went in there again with the butcher's knife and did a hatchet job on anything that looked like a library entry and now the problem is gone.

So between delete what continum suggesting and further deleting all library entries altogether seems to have solved it for now.

I found the solution to this issue.

The Win XP was missing usb.inf which should be in C:\WINDOWS\INF. I copied it and usb.pnf from a working Win XP VM and it was able to load the right drivers for the vmware usb hub.

I am new to VMWare so don't know the working of it.
drag and drop into ubuntu 9.10?
I am using vmware player version 2.5.3 on fedora to host a ubuntu 9.10 virtual machine, but I can't make the drag-and-drop features work. The guest machine has vmware-tools installed, and I know that they installed properly because I can run in "unity" mode just fine. My .vmx file contains the following lines:

isolation.tools.hgfs.disable = "FALSE"
isolation.tools.dnd.disable = "FALSE"

Is there something missing to make drag-and-drop features work? Could it be a problem with the way vmware-tools is setup on the guest OS?

I may of found a workaround to fix the issue. When I am prompted to update the Tools as the VM boots up, I choose "Remind Me Later". When I log into Windows OS, on the startup tray their should be an ! over the vmtools icon. I right clicked on it, choose Open VMtools and clicked on Updated Tools button. The VMTools CD installation started to run and installed ok. Oh, don't know if this helps but I also did a fresh install of VMPlayer 3. I removed the old player via Add Remove Programs. I didn't let the VMPlayer 3 install uninstall it.

Quick clarification: you have VMWare Tools installed in the guest? And 3D acceleration enabled? (It's not that you need 3D, but it does give more video RAM to the guest.)

For me, on one of my slower laptops, I could play DVDs in a Windows guest, but not at full screen. Maximum sized window, but not "full screen mode" of the DVD player program.

Actually, I got it to work. Well, I plugged in my device and started my XP VM in Player, and it shows 'Cypress USB Device' under 'Removable Devices' which is the device I need to connect. Also, I have tried to find the actual driver, but sadly, I found that it was stored in the installer for the software that came with it. It isn't just sitting in the CD somewhere, it is in the executable. When I installed the software, it automatically detects what system you are running and decides whether to install the driver or not. 7 was detected as Windows NT, which is unsupported.

Thanks for the help anyways!
Details on error incompatible database on the update server (41) .. worked only once, why?

When upgrading to VMWare Player 3.0, I somehow manager to get past the error "incompatible database on the update server (41)" when it was installing the updated VMTools on my VM. In turn, the new VMTools got installed ok and my dual monitors started to work. Now I am trying to do this upgrade/install of VMTools on another VM and I keep getting the "incompatible database on the update server (41)" error. I tried to do the upgrade from Player version 2.5.1 -> 2.5.3 -> then to 3, but same issue.
Can someone please tell me what this "error incompatible database on the update server (41)" means? What files is it comparing, what values .. can I manually updated it in a VM file somehow? Since I managed to get the VMTools installed on another VM, can I copy the VMWare Programs Files folder on the working host system and overwrite it on another host VM that gave me the error?
I really need more technical information about the error "incompatible database on the update server (41)"

Thank you all for your time
If there is an accented character (above ASCII 127) anywhere in the text, paste does nothing. This makes it very frustrating to do anything in Spanish.

Copy and paste of accented characters works fine within Ubuntu, but not from Ubuntu to Player 3.0.

Copy and paste of accented characters also works fine within Player 3.0.

I did not have this problem when I was using VMware Server 1.0.

My guest in both cases is Windows 98 SE.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I did not get a blue screen, My pc would get past the splash screen and then reset its self. I figured out the problem, I had my PC OC at 15% and it was causing a problem with VMware player on the reboot. I put my settings back to normal and what would you know the PC rebooted just fine.

Proxy settings (installation/ update VMware Tools)

Thanks for your suggestion.

The post you mentioned says:

Do you use a proxy server? If so, could you try going to Control Panel

Network and Internet > Internet Options > Connections >

LAN Settings and either:
A. Unchecking "Automatically detect settings"
B. Explicitly specifying a proxy server manually

?

Or try running Workstation and going to Edit > Preferences >
Updates and unchecking "Check for new software components as needed".

(1) My host system does not use a proxy.

(2) I tried the "Edit > Preferences > Updates ..." solution already last week and it did not solve the problem.

Thanks, hopefully your right about the changes I need being in the final release.

And just to be clear, my frustration is not with VMWare, but rather my companies reluctance to update vital programs. We could have had a version of IDEAS (CAD software) that was compatible with XP, instead of W2K SP3, and I wouldn't be having this issue.

I have not installed and tested version 7 yet, which may be what you are referring to, but I'll do more testing and report the findings.
VMware Player 3.0 freezes at startup for about 30 min

Hi,

here you go.

starting the Player today, it worked fine again.
It seems it likes cloudy Monday noons! Or 3rd-floor north windows better than 2nd-floor south?
No idea what has changed over the last 1,5 weeks! (Host is online)

However, i zipped the entire direcory.

the most current logfile (pid=3884) is the running instance. there's quite a history of logfiles resulting from the player was/had to be killed.
The DownloadJobMgr is (or thinks to be) DISCONNECTED, this at least fits into the picture. The host is in fact online and connected to the internet in the manner described above.

Hope you can find something.

Best regards,
VMPLAYER install, how do I open VM?

There is probably a virtual machine somewhere that you need to move to this XP demo machine.

If the XP computer is where you previously used VMware, then I would suggest looking in your user profile for a directory called "Virtual Machines" (maybe you used a different user account last time?). This is the default directory where virtual machines are stored.

In all honestly, it's less work to just create a Linux VM than it is to find the old one. Install VMware Player 3.0 (which has VM creation capabilities not available on previous versions). Use the "Create a virtual machine" option, select the Linux distro you wish to install (tell the New VM Wizard where the install disc for the Linux OS is located), and you should be good to go in no time.

Bridge and NAT networking issues for guest OS in VMWare Player

You will likely have to talk to your corporate IT to resolve this.

1. If using NAT, you have to replicate your host proxy configuration in the VM. If your proxy settings are transparent to you (because they are passed down by the domain controller), then you may have to ask your IT folk for what proxy settings to use.

2. If using bridge, your VM is probably explicitly being blocked (since your domain doesn't have knowledge of the virtual machine). You'd have to get that VM registered on your corporate LAN.

Hi anyone,

I installed Fedora 11 on my vmware player (running on windows xp).

Fedora is working but the mouse seems on another location then it is pointing to
Moving the mouse around it looks like the virtual mouse is less moving than the the real one.
In the upper left corner it seems ok but in the lower right corner the difference is half a screen.

I have found a solution for Fedora 9 (xorg.conf in /etc//X11) but that doesn't work for 11.

Anyone a solution to this ?

Thanks in advance.
Keep in mind - the so called virtual switches are actually virtual hubs
Two Bridged Network interfaces
I made the changes you proposed (Don't know why the file was so messed up, I only used the gui to change things) The first virtual network now works but the second one can't be connected.

I think this is because there is no vmnet2 running (I did restart the vmware service)

sudo vmware-networks --status
Bridge networking on vmnet0 is running
Network detection service is not running
All the services configured on all the networks are running

After adding

add_bridge_mapping eth0 0
add_bridge_mapping eth1 2

to /etc/vmware/networks things are running ok.

Thanks a lot for your help!

A workaround to enable NAT port forwarding on the crippled VMware Player 3.0.0

Thanks, continuum and popej. Your workarounds are very helpful. The next is just for vmware staff...

Player 3.0 contains vmnetcfg.exe, but probably this file is not installed

It is a very clever move from VMware, Inc. The best strategy to build a big and happy customer base is not to improve service, but to play a game of "where is it hidden" against the new customers. Since millions of customers love Nintendo's "Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box", next gaming industry's bestseller will be "VMware Player and the Hidden Utilities". A lot of laughs for free.

There is only a reason to hurry up to deploy versión 3.0.1... someone forgot to hide vmplayer.exe! After patching this critical bug, success will be guaranteed: it will be very funny to see all that customers asking "where I have to click?", "what is my mistake?", "how is it possible I cannot install a simple program?".

Crazy bridged network behavior

I'm using VMware player 3.0.0 build-203739 with an XP Pro laptop as the host, and the guest is also XP Pro. What I'm trying to accomplish is have the host connected to one VPN and the guest connected to another VPN. This worked fine using VirtualBox, but now that I've migrated to Player things are behaving strangely.

The first problem is that when neither is connected to their VPNs...with the guest set to use bridged networking the guest has no connectivity...but it did get an IP address on the host network via DHCP! It is unable to ping anything on the host network.

It gets even stranger...once I connect the host to its VPN, the guest is now able to communicate via the host network! Both VPNs are set to route all traffic through the VPN, so I initially thought that it was routing the guest through the host's VPN network. A tracert confirmed the opposite...that the guest's traffic is going out through the host network and not the host VPN! I suspected that the bridged network was bridging with the VPN adapter, but even after changing it to explicitly bind to the wireless adapter this was still working as described above.

So at this point I'm thinking that it may be due to the different filters that are on the network connections. In addition to the VMware Bridge Protocol, the other non-standard filters include a "McAfee NDIS Intermediate Filter", a "Deterministic Network Enhancer", and an "Eacfit Driver". The last one is related to the VPN, which throws a fit if it is not enabled on all interfaces.

Is there any sort of priority on the filters? It just seems very, very strange that the guest can talk to the host network only once the host has connected to the VPN.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
In the UI, you can check out the About dialog (Help > About), and I believe that it shows the location of the UI log file that corresponds to the current session. In general, those logs are stored in /tmp/vmware-<username>/ and are named something like ui-<pid>.log.

The log will be most valuable in determining what went wrong. A user shouldn't have have write permissions to /usr/lib/vmware, but some part of the download process should prompt for sudo credentials. The log will likely indicate clearly what actually went wrong, include permission issues.

auto-start a vm with pc start?
create a shortcut to the virtual machine configuration file (.vmx) in your startup folder.

Make sure you use a shortcut, and not copy the file.

Under vista/win7 the location of the startup folder changed, the quickest way to get there for all users is click start, then right click the "all programs >" and open all users. then simple browse into programs, then startup.

for systems with UAC enabled, you have to create the shortcut first (I usually create a shortcut on the desktop anyway) then move or copy the shortcut into the folder. if you try to drag and create a shortcut all at once, UAC causes that to fail.

why is vmnetcfg.exe NOT included in VMplayer 3 ???

not clever ? - this is nuts ...

why add the new feature of creating VMs and then on the other hand remove basic usabilty features.
On Windows you can still work around the missing vmnetcfg.exe but this workarounds are not documented by VMware and they even say that they do not want to document it.

For now you best install Workstation and run it without license - this will give you a VMplayer that is usable as the missing tools will be present then.

Weird ... really weird

thanks. seems obvious, but I once I knew I needed NAT, it was easier to figure out what to do.

I did have to reinstall the full version of Player 3.0 over the beta (which initially didn't install vmnet8 on the host for some reason). Also, when debugging, I had switched off the "Connect on startup"option in the VMware network adapter settings, and forgotten to turn it back on. Works great now.

Mouse/Graphics Speed in VMWare Player
I am having mouse/graphics speed issues through VMWare player. This is my test run into virtual machines and am running Windows XP. I already adjusted the acceleration of the graphics through Settings in the VMWare tools and also through Display-->Settings-->Advanced and speed, neither of which worked.

Is there a way to update the graphics card. The graphics on the hosting machine work perfectly.
Setting subnet for host-only in player 3.0
I'm moving from VMware Server 2.0.1 to VMware Player 3.0. Host is ubuntu 9.10.

In VMware Server I could set the specific subnet for vmnet1 host-only by running vmware-config.pl.

I can't find vmware-config.pl or an equivalent script in VMware Player 3., so how can the host-only subnet be set to a specific value?

I do not want to use the supplied default subnet as I have a number of guests that require static Ip addresses that I don't want to have to change.

TIA, Mark

Hibernate does not work
I'm a bit late to the game, but I do bring news.

I've had the exact same experience- and for me, it's a complete show stopper. It happens with VMware Workstation, VMware Player, and VMware Server. When one of these products is installed, I cannot put my machine into standby, hibernation, software reboot or even shutdown. Which means that I need to keep my laptop running, or force it off by holding down the power button. This happens even when VMware is not running, and there are no VMs running. It happens when VMware is the ONLY virtualization provider on the machine- I tried this on a clean build to make sure that it wasn't a conflict with VirtualBox or Virtual PC.

One suggestion, the only thing I tried that helped, was to disable all VMware network interfaces by right clicking on them and choosing "Disable." With the VMware virtual network interfaces disabled, I can usuall reboot or shutdown; hibernation and suspend still don't work. When I want to use a VMware VM I have to reenable them and remember to disable them after I'm done.

I'm running Windows XP SP4- upgrading your service pack won't help anything.

The only solution I came up with was to try Sun's VirtualBox or Microsoft's Virtual PC. I'd suggest checking them both out. VirtualBox is the closest to VMware as far as features, speed and compatibility; Virtual PC feels and performs a bit like a version of VMware from 4-5 years ago- nothing like we have today with VMware and VirtualBox, but it's nice to have an option when VirtualBox doesn't hack it and VMware is busy killing your machine. :P Because I'm not the only one who has had these problems at work, we're looking into migrating over to VirtualBox. At this point, we're not sure what option we have for our workstations.

Sort of like a Microsoft product: "It's great software, except that it doesn't work." :P

VirtualBox: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
Virtual PC: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=04D26402-3199-48A3-AFA2-2DC0B40A73B6&displaylang=en

Best of luck to you!
