Vmware ace package created in 6.5 in combination workstation 5.5

Hi John,

Workstation and ACE packages can only coexist on the same machine when they are of the same version.

So.. Workstation 6.5.3 + ACE Player 2.5.3 =ok
Workstation 6.5.2 + ACE Player 2.5.2 = ok
Workstation 7 + ACE Player 2.6 = ok
etc

So it'll need to be decided which base to use. I would not recommend Workstation 5.5 as the base as that product's support has reached its end of life, so if there would be any problems your end users would be at their own.

Modify published ACE VMs
Hello,

I have about 25 PCs in my department. All these PCs have a local copy of the same ACE VM. This ACE VM is updated once a month.

So when the VM is out of date I deactivate this VM in the Management Server. Now all the 25 PCs need the updated Version of the ACE VM.

At the moment the users manually copy the new ACE VM from a network share to their local computer. When all users are doing this the same time the performace is pretty slow

-> Is there a way to automate this task, perhaps at night? So that the useres allways have the most recent VM without any manual installation?
(I know about the silent Installation for the ACE Package, but how do I get the Package on the PC?)

Thanks for help!

ACE futile performance test?
I mainly wanted to see if I could build an ACE session that would perform really well. Some guys at work are building one and it has been running like garbage. I'm the VMware guy on the team, but I don't have access to anything just yet (new job). My suggestions have lead them in the right direction, but I don't think things are where they need to be. Ohh, I meant to refer to PCoIP in the VM View world, as being able to have a better display.

So I tested a Windows 7 ACE session at home. I've been playing Far Cry and watching HD movies with no problem. I didn't even strip anything out of the default Windows 7 load. I'm thinking of making a youtube video, just for a demo. ACE is getting some really bad reviews at this new gig, so I need to show them what it can do. Of course I realize many other factors can be involved in different deployment scenarios (network latency, host resources, sea monsters, solar flares, ect...). What I'm testing with is pretty high end, but possible.

Perhaps you can use the vmware-acetool to "clone" the instance to an un-ACEified vm, then open that new clone in Workstation and make it into a new ACE.

Do a "vmware-acetool /?" and look for the CloneToVM option. You will need the Recovery Key.

Remote desktop to host machine

Hi All,

I have vmware ace running on my host machine and have setup a couple of virtual images to run on the machine. I am now remote desktoping to the host machine from another site and I am able to start the Virtual machine up. However when I try to input into the virtual machine it does not except input, the mouse does not work nor the keyboard. Have tryed the Ctrl G for direct input and that does not work. I am able to move the Ace screen around, communicate with the vmware player menu and even take a snapshot of the machine. It is just the actual virtual OS machine I cannot use.
Am I missing a setting or is it not possible to use a virtual machine when remoting to the host machine via remote desktop?

Thanks in advance,
Modify data but Protect for extraction
Hi.

We want to send a virtual machine to one supplier in an USB disk, to let him edit some confidential data. We want to let read and modify this data, and eventually print, but to restrict copy or extract from hard disk.

Supplier won't have access to our network.

Can ACE protect virtual machine for this scenario? is this totally secure?

Thanks very much
How is ACE creating the Sysprep folder
When deploying customized ACE a Sysprep folder is appearing in the %systemroot%. I created my own sysprep directory there, but the ACE deployment installer appears to create its own virtual sysprep directory, so it does not see mine.

How do I customize the sysprep that the ACE deployment uses so it contains my OEM files?

Yes, it is possible. Best method is to use Workstation 6.5 to generate the ACE deployment package. Use policies to put a time limit on the package. You can set it to 'expire' after a certain date.

I have the sysprep files loaded in the correct location, but when I try to deploy the ACE using customization I get a 'Files Needed' dialouge box asking for the path to agt0407.dll on the SP3 CD. The copy from path is '\sysprep\i386'. I browse to that folder, but it is empty.
how to update Ace policy manually
I am running ACE 2.52 and want to be able to run the ace image, if connected to any ethernet network, wireless and with a 3G card. When the ace image starts, it looks for the server and finds the policy with ethernet and wireless fine. IT does not run the policy when the 3G card is connected and wireless and ethernet is not available. Quite a bit of these laptops will use 3G connection versus ethernet or wireless. I am also launching the image so they are not able to go back to the host.

Is there some sort of script or command I can run to make sure the new policy gets updated from the ace management server? Or are there any suggestions to this scenario.

Troubleshooting policy scripts
After several tests and similar errors I presume I found the solution of my specific trouble.

I post it because I hope it can help other people.

While specifying the policy script using a .vbs script you must include the name of the application you use to run the script, in my case you must enter "cscript /nologo scriptname.vbs".

/nologo is required to avoid two lines that can be interpreted as the command output.

I hope this can help...
Licensing Question
Hi guys,

I am really confused about the licensing options for ACE.

I have WS6 with the ACE Option Pack - well I assume it is the ACE option pack as I cannot find any reference to it in WS!! The reason I believe I have it is because I have an option in WS to 'Enable ACE features' which lets me set the deployment settings and policies etc...

The problem I have is this....Having created a VM in workstation I wanted to deploy it to a USB drive which I had no problem doing. I then took the USB drive to another computer where the VM duly complained about not having a license.

From what I understand each device is licensed with a ACE client license not the VM itself. I also thought that if you had the ACD option pack you also have volume key licensing as part of it?? What license do I have to enter into the player to get this to work? Are any client licenses included in the VLK?

Any help is apprecated

Thanks

I'm having the same issue - I have an open suse guest which works fine on VMware workstation 6.5.3, but on converting to a pocket ACE package the network adapter goes awol. if i enter admin mode on the ACE machine i can see that the network adapter is there and "connected" is ticked, but no network icon in the tray, or visible from the VM. Network access policy is also set to full access.
VMware ACE - Kiosk mode
The -k option is a command line switch used when launching the virtual machine.

For instance, if you create a shortcut to the VM (vmx file), and look at the Properties option, you should insert the -k after the path to the machine.

eg. "C:\Directory\Virtual Machine.vmx -k"

This will only work if you have enabled the Kiosk option for the VM.

Also, it is giving me an ACE client license required message..... Didn't see anywhere the ace client license evaluation can be found in VMware..

Which client license with ACE 2.5 and Workstation 6.5 ?
Hi,

what I tested now is a evaluation Volume license key and this is not working with Workstation 6.5 but with the ACE option pack in Workstation 6.0.

So it looks like that there's changed something when ACE got integrated in Workstation 6.5.

I like to get an answer from people who are using the actual Workstation 6.5 version and deploying ACE clients.

Thanks,
Error while opening the ACE: invalid session
Well problem is partially solved.

In my case at least: "Error while opening the ACE: invalid session" is a message that vmware player gives when there is no DNS server entries in the host IP configuration. I was using a hosts file to resolve the name of my ace management server in a test environment, apparently player doesn't work with a hosts file for this purpose.

Now that the instance can properly resolve the hostname of the management server to an IP, I get the following error (which is what I expected):

"Error while opening the ACE: Cannot find a valid license to run this ACE. Please enter a serial number or contact your ACE administrator."

So I've read about 10 posts, and the ACE manual, and everone says that I should enter the ACE volume license key into the VMWare workstation installation where I created the package. VMWARE WORKSTATION WILL NOT ACCEPT THE SERIAL NUMBER. So either I'm doing something wrong, or there's something wrong with the S/N. I've tried entering both the licenses labeled: "VMWare volume licensing key - Additive licenses", and "VMware Workstation ACE Option Pack for Windows, Promotion" I try to cut & paste these into the "help > enter serial number" dialogue in vmware workstation, and every time it says: "The serial number entered did not match any licenses."

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure this method, but maybe this issue came from VPN driver.
You are correct. It was right in front of me the whole time. In the Workstation User's Manual under 'Learning the Basics of VMware ACE'. It's odd that the definition exist in the Workstation user manual, but not in the ACE Mangement Server Admin Manual.

Encryption key security in memory
I am evaluating ACE for use as a java development environment for offshore developers. The developers have full access to the source code, but in order to guard our intellectual property, must not be able to cut and paste, or transfer files outside the company network.

We are currently using RDP to machines (locked down) at a company site, but response times can be so slow as the make this unusable.

The ACE solution alternative I was considering:

1. Encrypted ACE vm containing development environment on developer PCs.
2. Restricted networking, only allowing connection to a VPN server. VPN connection requires certifcate installed in ACE vm.
3. Copy and paste to host disabled.

I see at least one potential problem which may allow the encrypted vmdk disk file to be unlocked thus allowing the source code to be transferred electronically.
The ACE/vmplayer executables will be executing as a normal user program and it seems fairly simple to write a win32 program that will dump the memory of any process, thus exposing the encryption key for the configuration file which in turn can be used to find the find the disk encryption key.

Does the vmware ace executable guard against reading of the encryption key for the configuration file and the disk encryption key by another process?

(I understand that the source code could be much more simply captured using screenshots from the host then scanned using OCR - but this could be error prone. If the key can be exposed using the above method then repeating the procedure using the gained knowledge and toolset will be rapid)

Computer naming in an ACE deployment

Hey,

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experiences around customizing the computer naming in an ACE instance? The current solution of being able to add a number of characters from the hosts computer name isn't doing it for me.

We currently have computer naming schema which is: SSSSS-T-NNNNNNN (S = SITE, T = ComputerType, N=incremented computer number)

T(Computer Type) is currently one of W(orkstation)/L(ab)/S(erver) .. What I would like to do is taking the current workstation/laptop name (example UKLON-W-0001234) and get the ACE instance to be called UKLON-V-0001234.

Any ideas if it is possible to do this during the final customization phase when the user has launched it in the VMWare Player through the VIX API?

I'm supporting several hundered ACE clients deployed across the USA, and we have received several identical calls. We are currently working to build an updated package, and would like to see this issue resolved before we start upgrading our deployed ACE instances.

All the ACE instances are installed on Windows XP systems (no pocket ACE), we are using volume license keys.

How do I create a Live CD/ PE Connection to ACE ?
Hi Jose,

You are correct. I am trying to figure out how to get VMware View so it is preloaded onto a live cd (any OS)

Currently, I have a USB4WIN USb Flash drive that the machine boots to, loads IE in Terminal mode, goes to the ACE server, and fails while trying to load VMware View. I have worked pas the security problem of the unsigned appelet. But the LiveCD I am using doesn't have the Windows Installer service installed, so of course the VMware View Client can't be installed.

I could try and create a plugin, but thought I would ask first to see if anyone else has already done this.
Thanks for all replies. Looks like I will have to go down the dual boot mode within 1 VM. Otherwise it is a double hit on the licenses used on the Server.
ACE Hardware Requirements - For a Training Lab setup
Why do you want to use ACE for that? If you want to host 10 VMs simultaneously on the same host and the students are to connect to that VMs from their clients, you'd better use VMware ESX/ESXi or VMware Server. For this you need as much ressources as required for the applications you mentioned. You should also plan enough harddisk space to store VM templates, installation images and eventually for creating more than one application version for an VM.The harddisk space also depends on the used guest OS.

CPU: One quadcore CPU has enough power to handle all VMs.

RAM: You should summarize the required RAM für each application, multiply it by 10 and add 20 to 30% as spare RAM.

If you plan to provide high availablity you have to use two ESX servers, of course. A downtime could end a training session very appruptly, doesn't it?

--

2nd scenario: If you plan to use ACE instances on the students clients and you only want to use the server to create/provide the ACE packages.

For this you only need:

hard disk space on the for the VMs, the ACE packages and the installation images for the OS and applications

enough RAM to start the VMs for functional testing (not for all VMs at the same time)

a dual core CPU for good ACE package creation performance

maybe a fast network connection for downloading the packages to the students clients.

Regards

I solved my problem. It was caused by the fact that I had a non-ACE
version of Workstation running before I tried ACE. I had to uninstall
this first, because the new version seems to run with the old license
key even if I input the new code. I suppose the uninstall procedure
also removes license-code entries from the registery, but entering a
new key via "Help>Enter Serial Number..." does not.
Having a similar issue on 3 host systems with ACE VMs loaded.

The tray icon which shows the status of the network access policy has disappeared from the host system. Some of these users have been having network connectivity issues at remote sites and are unable to identify if the access policy is being applied incorrectly. When ACE is started, the VM does display the correct network access information. The hosts are running a mixture of Windows XP Pro SP2 and SP3. The loaded ACE version is 2.5.1, build 126130.

Is there a way to force the icon to appear on the host?

Where to read the Host Machine name
just joined the community, saw this posting. i came across the same question last summer, figured it out by visitng this page:

{font:Arial}{size:10pt}http://pubs.vmware.com/ws6_ace2/ws/tools_guestd_string_gsx.html{size}{font}

Like the other mentioned, basically you just have to use a host-guest script to pass the hostname across to your guest. How to do that is by assigning the machine.id to the %computername% (if this is windows host), then you can use /usr/sbin/vmware-guestd --cmd `machine.id.get` to see the host's machine.id on your linux guest. To retrieve the hostname of your windows host on a windows machine is to use

If you are using a linux host and window guest, assign machine.id to `hostname` then pass it via the ace resources which is packaged into a vm when you publish it. then again use

i'm not the best writer, but just thought to post it hopefully it helps someone out there

Ace serial number when evaluating workstation
With Workstation version 6 you were able to start a created ACe package for testing directly on the Workstation with the ACE Option. Installing the ACe package an starting the ACE instance on another PC required an so-called ACE client license. I haven't tried to start an ACE instance created with a workstation 6.5 using an evaluation license.

So you need the following:

1. VMware Workstation with ACE Option Pack (the ACE options are activated by typing in an ACE license key

2. Number of ACE client licenses according to the number of users that are to use ACE instances

3. A license for the management server (if you want to use it to manage the deployed ACE clients from a central administration console)

There are the following ACE kist: ACE starter kit, ACE standard kit, ACE enterprise kit

The Standard and enterprise kits contain a number of volume licenses.
VMware ACE no longer starts
Updates to the latest version of VMware ACE / Player did not work. The images still did not start beyond drawing the initial outline border.

However - The problem has been resolved !

We found that the host computers were mapped to company intra-net printers across four geographical locations. When the mapped printers were deleted from both host computers, except for a primary local office printer, both VMware ACE images returned to normal operation.

We have concluded that there is a deficiency within the VMware ACE start-up relating to printers linked to the host computer, not the application within the image. This is because neither image was allowed to use printers. Thus we did not expect the host mapping to be of any influence. Obviously we're glad that the product is usable, but wonder if other VMware ACE start-up issues could be related to similiar host configurations.

How to Defrag an ACE Virtual Disk??
Hi Gerry,

in addition to defragmentation inside the VM you should defragment the vDisk before you package an ACE Client. If this best practice comes too late for the VM you mention than you should consider this for future packages. The second way to "defragment" a ACE vDisk is to activate the ACE option to go back to the VM state of the ACE package --> "Policies/Runtime Preferences/Always discard chnages". This is an option for Pocket ACE Clients. You also could active the snapshot feature. Of course this alternative is only useful for VMs that don't store working data (e.g. for show cases, demos , trainings, ...)

Memory restriction in ACE managed images?

Thanks for your reply. The documentation I have read was a bit ambiguous on this point. It suggested to me that you could limit the end user's ability to change the memory settings or not. If you restricted the ability of the user to change memory allocation, then they would not see the slider in the player (under VMWare Player --- Troubleshoot --- Change Memory Allocation).

Thanks for clarifying.

In your case the simplest solution is the VDI approached mentioned earlier.

Create a template for each classes workstation.

You can then use the powershell add-ins and a text file to clone workstations from the template.

The student would either use a thin client or pc to connect to the rdp session on the image.

My 2 cents anyway
Hi Orphius,

did you deploy Pocket ACE packages? Using Pocket ACE you have the option to synchonize or not. This is possible to adress the use case for Pockate ACE - to transport the ACE VM on a mobile device such as an usb stick. As long as you don't synchonize all changes are stored on the PC ACE is installed on. Unfortunately the synchonization can take vey long (15-30 minutes or longer). So you have to give it some time to end successfully. Normally during synchronization a bar is shown to indicate the process. But in my experience in some cases it take already long to get to this screen.

If you don't want to move the ACE VM to other devices should deactivate the synchronization feature when creating the ACE package.

Hi gkin,

in case that your problem isn't solved. If you use VMware ACE for runnning VMs you have to consider that ACE licenses are bound to the device the ACE package is installed first. If you you a Pocket ACE VM you have to license the master. Otherwise you would have to input the license each time you move the VM to another device.
ACE - Create a package from a VM fails with error
Hi,

I am new to ACE and I have a question.

I created a ACE Server on Windows in my Workstation. I also created a other Windows Machine and enabled ACE for this VM. I changed some propeties e.x. the date of expire and created a package. This works perfect. The VM was able to start and so on.

Then I created a new package from the same VM. This package was not able to start. I get the following error:

"Error while opening the ACE: Access to this ACE is blocked. This ACE was not installed properly or it has been corrupted."

Can you give me some information about this? Is it only possible to create one package from one VM?

Thanks,
Ace 2.0 Dual Monitor Support
We recognize that multiple monitor configurations have become pervasive and support for it in VMPlayer is a top requested feature. I have asked our development team to scope the effort required to implement this capability and I can't make any promises, but I would like to see this feature included in VMPlayer in the near future!

Guys, I guess I've figured out the problem.

One of minor changes I had done during these 2-3 days, was configuring an incoming connecting (for VPNs) on my host.

After removing it, now VMware works fine again!

I've no idea why this might be relevant, but anyway this or a similiar slotting may work for you too.
recommend 16 flash drive for pocket ACE
Ive tried the SanDIsk Ultra Cruzer Titanium and the Kingston HyperX. The HyperX has blistering read speeds (up to 30MB/s) with write speeds of 20MB/s. The SanDIsk is slightly slower (15MB/s read, 9MB/s write) but is more versatile as it is U3 compatible. You won't get this error message using either of these two USB sticks.
Slow startup after installing packages
Some users report that their PCs (mainly notebooks) have a slow startup (up to ten minutes) after installing an ACE pachage.

If they remove their ACE package the startup performances returns normal.

If they reinstall the ACE package the startup returns slow.

How can we troubleshoot and solve this issue?
ACE Host Network Access Policy
Am looking at deploying ACE for temp workers in our company. From the manuals I understand that if you use a network access policy to restrict Host access on the Internal network (but allow guest) this is still active even when the ACE instrance is not running on the host.

Does the network access policy expire if you have the ACE instance set to expire, or do you have to uninstall the ACE instance (and or VMPlayer) to disbale the Network Access policy ?

thanks

Worksation itself works just peachy and even runs Vista VM's, it's the speed of the ACE that is an issue so I don't think BIOS is an issue. Yes, I know laptop drives are slow, I use an eSATA drive with the laptop for VM work. And, yes, the Core Duo machine is a desktop.

I doubt it is anything AMD specific. It probably is just a speed issue. The instance customization process doesn't do anything Core Duo (nor Intel) specific. It simply powers on the VM and runs sysprep in the guest. How long does your laptop take to boot up Vista, log in, and start all the services (though only VMware Tools matters). WS assumes that most hw should be able to do this in under 5 mins. It sounds like your laptop had no issues doing instance customization with XP. So it could just be a matter of Vista being more of a resource hog.
Yes, I've seen that... and it's quite impressive. However, there are limitations:

support for Windows XP guests only (not Vista)

it still seems to emulate through software certain 3D features (shading, etc)

I would like to know if it is possible to make the physical hardware (video card) available to the virtual machine. This way, I would also be able to get 3D hardware acceleration in Vista and Linux guests..

Here is a simple question to all: has anyone succeeded in creating an ACE Vista package in the latest version of WS 6.5/ACE using the ACE deployment settings? If so, can you please doucment how you got there? I keep bombing out in the mini-setup phase when I run preview. It looks like some sort of sysprep info is missing but I have no idea how to provide it or even get to the sysprep files the deployment process creates.
ACE bare-metals install
Hi Jocelyn,

The company i work for is getting alot of interest from our clients around "OS on a USB stick" or VMware pocket ACE. Some of our larger clients have a need to be portable (as with most organisations i'm sure) and the challenge we face at the moment is how do we provide a solution that fits their requirements without doubling up on licensing costs or in the case of Pocket ACE allowing our customers to be truly portable without the need to install the VMware player on the host machine. There are a number of value add proposition we can put forward to clients by utilising this type of functionality but the most ideal revolves around disaster recovery.

Ideally what we would like to do is:

Create an instance of the clients OS
Put it on a USB pen drive
Which allows the user to plug the drive into any machine around the world (without installing the player on the host) and be up and running
Even better, be able to boot the virtual instance straight from the USB stick without the need to start a guest OS. Now that would be a great value proposition.

While VDI is certainly an option, some of our global customers have offices in very remote geographical locations with very small bandwidth (dial up - at best) which has its own headaches when the connections between these locations and the datacentre goes down.

Add the clients executives to the mix and now you have a bunch of people that love going out and buying the latest and greatest laptops\tablets on the market and want them to be integrated into the environment (even though we point them to their own security policies which predicates any new devices must go through test and certification first!) But then again you don't really want to be telling the CEO of one of your biggest clients you can't meet his demands. To take it one step further, lets say their device gets nailed with a virus and the guest OS wont start at all and they are in another country preparing for a vital business presentation so the chances of getting a replacement device to them in time to present will be very slim.

If we could throw everything they need on a USB pen drive and ship it out on the next flight, the user can be up in running in no time and when they return we can rebuild the machine.

Anyway, i'm sure there are many other scenarios out there where the ability to run a virtual instance without installing the player would come in handy, just my five cents....Thanks Al

Microsoft licensing
Hi,

the same old question again but it seems that nobody has an answer ( Microsft first ).

The question is about the licensing of the MS product ( first of all the os ) that we want to virtualize in an ACE environment. To be more specific we have a certain number of clients with Vista OEM license ( downgraded to XP ) and we want to use an ACE environment to run legacy and other programs in a separate environment ( guest OS Windows 2000 ). These environments will be active as the same time. All the virtualization is local - on lthe client - no server . Keeping in mind that our company has a select Volume License the question is what Microsoft license schemas are suitable for this scenario? ( Microsoft sugggested SA and EA but this seems to be a persuasive position... )

Anybody face the same problem?

Thanks for your help

Certificate did not verify
I'm trying to evaluate ACE. I have the ACE server running and my workstation with ACE pack running great. I created a simple ACE instance to try and deploy on my linux laptop. However, when I try and run it I get an error that the "certificate did not verify". I did upload an SSL certificate and did not use the self signed one (and it's a wildcard certificate). However, I'm not sure this is the issue. First off, the errors I saw in the log file looked like this....

Oct 22 10:50:38.315: vmplayer| Error loading libxmlrpc_xmlparse.so.3: libxmlrpc_xmlparse.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or

None of the directories in the /usr/lib/vmware/lib had the '-i386' on the name so I created a bunch of symbolic links. However, that didn't fix the error and here's what the log says now...

It's very hard to evaluate with errors like this.

ACE instance Customization Issue
Hi

I have exactly the same error. If I open vmware.log in the folder where the package runs, it states:

Oct 20 15:46:42.992: vcpu-0| Instance customization is done with errors. Failed in state: dj_net_join_domain. Status returned: 5. Description of failure: Could not join domain, and named seems qualified. Error: 87.
Oct 20 15:46:42.992: vcpu-0| PolicyImcHandleFailure: Instance Customization failed. Reason: 5, state: dj_net_join_domain, description: Could not join domain, and named seems qualified. Error: 87.
Oct 20 15:46:47.117: vcpu-0| Msg_Post: Error
Oct 20 15:46:47.117: vcpu-0| http://msg.policyImgCust.TranslateError Instance customization failed. Please contact your administrator or retry instance customization by powering on the ACE.----------------------------------------

All the info provided in the instance customization step is right, but it dows not work...

By the way, when i first started to customize the vm, the app told me that the passwords for the join domain and for the local admin will be set during the package creation step. When I started the package building process, it failed because of the missing passwords. As I went back the fields for the passwords for both the join domain and local admin where visible!!! I entered those info, and - the packaged builing process works by miracle!!!
