Would like to find someone who is using VMwareLifecycle Manager. We are currently using a combination of VMware ESX 3.5 and Lab Manager 3. We are evaluating the VMware Lifecycle Manager for the workflow provisioning features, specifically. Anyone have any experience with this product in a production environment?

Going ESX, 1 server....

The server hardware sounds pretty good, I would try to increase the RAM if possible. Your 5 NT boxes will run fine with 8 GB but going forward you'll want/need more. If necessary, dial down the proccessors. Two Quad-Cores per box should be plenty. Especially if they're the new Nehalem procs. The other issue you'll run into is that almost any ESX feature will require you to have the VMs on shared storage. Either a SAN or NAS with FC, iSCSI, or NFS. HA, DRS, DPM, or FT won't work with the VMs on local storage. My reccommendation would be to scale back on the 1TB of local storage and go with a mid to high-end NAS.

VCB Creating Groups

We use both vRanger (small ESX clusters) and VCB by itself. The VCB alone is due to a large ESX cluster where vRanger would be well overpriced. Once VCB is configured, you just need to script the process and then run the script. Look at the included script in VCB called pre-command.wsf - you can put it into a batch file and just copy the line for each server. This way, you just have to run the batch file.

VMWare and Dell EqualLogic Implementation
Hi Eric:

Separating out Data to another volume will signifcantly reduce the deltas. As you have noticed, system volume will have enormous amount of deltas even though nothing changed. EQ has offline replication which is recommended for the first replication - it replicates to a tape which you can take to remote site and restore.

There is no need to replicate system volumes on a daily basis as they don't change at all unless we install any o/s or software updates. May be you can replicate them on-demand basis (when the production vm is updated) or maintain a set of VMs on the remote site and install o/s of software updates on them when you do the production VMs. I know it is slightly more work but it saves you a lot of bandwidth.
From what I have seen, just make sure that you allocate enough RAM and processor to each VM running SQL. You should not put mor that 10-12 VMs per VMFS LUN - maybe less is there is high disk I/O on the SQL. There are best practices whitepapers that you should follow for performance, etc. Your best place to start is to do a Capacity Planner analysis of any servers you wish to make virtual. this will guide you in consolidation ratios and give you good performance stats.

You can certainly PM me if you have more questions, but you would probably be better off posting a new question in the forums. That way you will get a bunch of different opinions.
basically you need a host that can run ESX server and a bucket full of disk and memory. remember that you do not need to give your guest 4gb of ram and 2CPU's, you will not be able to test Areo under VDI as the virtualised graphics card is not a decent one. but I have many VIsta Guest running under VDM and serving many users.
Thanks for the advice. I'm new to this type of thin. I was able to talk to a sales rep and they walked me through the process. I went into the virtual machine at the top of the page, held down the option key on the key board and hit shut machine. Forcing the machine to close. It worked.
Virtualization Technology Conference 2008

Unlike VTC 2007 which PAVMUG co-hosted with ETC, this year's VTC was hosted only by ETC. Up until about 2 weeks ago, VMware was not even expected to participate in the event. Since VMware was not originally involved in the event, neither was PAVMUG (we are exclusively a VMware User Group).

To receive notice of PAVMUG events, check:
VMware's events website - http://www.vmware.com/a/events/vmug/

PAVMUG meetings are scheduled for June 26th and July 24th @PennState Great Valley 8am - Noon.
I am having the same problem with the Job directory part. What am I supposed to put there and what format?

Every time I run a backup, I keep getting an error in the temp files that says there was some sort of command line error and it does not specify what the error is.

I currently have a ticket open with Vmware support on this too as their seems to be little to no documentation on it.

Do I need to install a MS OS on a new server before I can use VMWare to create virtual servers

People may be confusing the VMware Virtual Server (hosted server) with ESX Server / VI3 (bare-metal hypervisor). The hosted server needs an O/S platform to run on (e.g., Microsoft Windows or Linux). The bare-metal hypervisor runs directly on the hardware.

I recently switched from my employer of 7 years to a new company and the VI3 Cert that I had did a lot to justify the price I demanded as well as get me in the door.

I am sure a lot of people who have taken the exam agree with me that it isn't the best representation of your ability, but it does create a separation between people who say they know VMware and those who have been formally trained for employers.
Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: Wiley (February 12, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0471783951
ISBN-13: 978-0471783954

Book Description

Blade server systems and virtualization are key building blocks for Next Generation Enterprise Data centers
Blades offer modular, pre-wired, ultra high-density servers (up to 10x traditional servers) with shared components (power, cooling, switches) – reducing complexity and cost, and improving flexibility, availability, manageability, and maintainability
Virtualization enables consolidation of physical servers by allowing many virtual servers to run concurrently on one physical server – improving system utilization, reducing the total number of physical servers, reducing costs, and increasing flexibility
This is the first book covering these complementary technologies and how, together, they provide a strong foundation for the future
It examines the history, architectures, features, examples, and user case studies of blade systems and virtualization, and offers guidance and considerations for how to evaluate and implement solutions

From the Back Cover
Get up to speed on blade servers and virtualization

The combination of blade servers and virtualization provides you with the flexibility, high availability, and manageability to deliver services on demand to users anywhere, anytime. Guiding you through these two technologies, this book clearly shows you why they are rapidly becoming key foundation building blocks for the next generation of data centers.
VM Security

Attached file contains links

We in the security business couldn't help but to take notice of a Gartner press release that went out last week about how virtualization can weaken security. It capped roughly six weeks of press and blog discussions about virtualization and security. To help you make sense of it I've selected a list of what I think is the best feature coverage from across the meda.

Recent Coverage of Virtualization and Security

"Virtualization's New Frontier: Security" - InformationWeek - Larry Greenemeier - March 2007
Larry talks about the benefits and security risks inherent with virtualization, based on recent interviews with security and virtualization experts; the article includes a pros and cons chart for virtualization security.

"VMS Create Potential Risks" - Dark Reading - Kelly Jackson Higgins - February 2007
Kelly interviews Gartner's Neil MacDonald, VMware's Patrick Lin, Matasono's Thomas Ptacek, Security Incite's Michael Rothman and Blue Lane's Allwyn Sequeira in a timely and thorough introduction to the virtualization security discussion.

"Virtualization: The Beginning of the End of Static Security" - Always On - Greg Ness - February 2007
I've been simply overwhelmed by the blogsphere reaction to my mid-February column at Always On. Six virtualization expert blogs have linked to the column and initiated some excellent dialogue. I talk about the 4 critical differences between physical and virtualized infrastructures and what it means for static security solutions. Want to follow the blog discussion? Simply click on the Technorati icon that follows the piece and follow the links!

"VMware Annoints Blue Lane" - Searchservervirtualization.com - Alex Barrett - March 2007
Alex interviewed a wide range of experts, including a leading virtualization consultant about Blue Lane and the impact of virtualization on security. It's obvious that hours of interviews went into her very thorough coverage of the Blue Lane launch. Note: while we don't consider ourselves a patch management vendor, we do protect VMs from remote attacks against unpatched vulnerabilities.

"Blue Lane Shields Virtual Machines" - Network World - Denise Dubie - March 2007
Denise was the first editor to cover the emergence of the application front end, which ultimately became a sizable category with the likes of Cisco, Citrix, F5 and Juniper joining the category through acquisition and/or product extension. It wasn't surprising, therefore, to see her piece get picked up across the IDG global empire.

"Blue Lane Provides Security for Virtual Machines" - InfoWorld - David Marshall - March 2007
If your scanning news and blogs about virtualization its difficult not to run into David. He is typical of InfoWorld's ability to recruit insightful, "no-holds-barred" subject matter experts across multiple categories. David's concise overview of the security challenges of virtualization is easy to read and informative.

Next time I'll share my favorites from the blogsphere, where virtualization and security bloggers have also weighed in. BTW- Neil MacDonald's Gartner report is well worth the read. If you're not a Gartner client and want an excellent analyst introduction to the issues check out this Nemertes report.

Gregory Ness
P.S. You can always find other research papers and webcasts about patching in our Info Center.

VMcasting

http://www.vmcasting.org/

VMcasting is an automatic virtual machine deployment mechanism based on RSS2.0 whereby virtual machine images are transferred from a server to a client securely delivering files containing a Technical Specification (http://www.vmcasting.org/vmcastingspec/) and virtual disk image.

The concept of VMcasting is based on the similar concept of Podcasting, the popular trend of audio content delivered via an RSS feed presenting a downloadable or streaming file (often an MP3). With VMcasting, a developer publishes an RSS 2.0 feed where each item describes a release of a particular Virtual Machine Image or Virtual Appliance. The items descriptions may contain release notes or other information about what's new in a particular release. Therefore developers can be easily upgrade or install using a virtual server management system such as Enomalism.

Putting my right credentials in returns me to the same login screen.

At the Jan. 26 meeting someone asked about Solaris on VMware. Well I wrote an article that might be helpful to some people:

http://brushmore.blogspot.com/2006/01/installing-opensolaris-on-vmware-draft.html

Please send me any feedback you might have.
enlarge disk dimension

Yes vmkfstools will allow you to expand the size of the vmdk

Refer to "Using vmkfstools" in the ESX Server Administration and Installation Guide at www.vmware.com/support/esx21/doc/esx21admin_vmvkfstools.html

This command extends the specified VMFS to the specified length.
vmkfstools -X --extendfile #[gGmMkK]

Use this command to extend the size of a disk allocated to a virtual machine, after you have created the virtual machine. The virtual machine that uses this disk file must be powered off when you enter this command. Also, the guest operating system must be able to recognize and use the new size of the disk, for example, by updating the file system on the disk to take advantage of the extra space.

You specify the size in kilobytes, megabytes or gigabytes by adding a suffix of k (kilobytes), m (megabytes) or g (gigabytes), respectively.

Caution: This operation makes fundamental, irreversible changes to the virtual machine's disk. Take the precautionary measure of creating a backup copy of the virtual disk prior to continuing.

To resize an existing Windows 2000 virtual disk, for example, execute the following command:
vmkfstools -X 8000M vms:win2000.dsk

This command expands the virtual disk file named win2000.dsk that is stored on a VMFS partition named vms to a size of 8GB.

After expanding the disk file, you must run a partition manipulation tool such as PartitionMagic, Volume Manager or ServerMagic in the virtual machine to expand the partition seen by the virtual machine into the newly created space on the virtual disk.

PAVMUG Member Survey Summary Report

We got a lot of new User Surveys from our 2nd meeting (1/27/2005). We'll aggregate these with the User Surveys from the 1st meeting to see if the trends are shifting any.

Obviously, we can continue to update the information quarterly on a manual basis with each new meeting and new users. If we could get a web-based application going, then people could update their preferences online and we could generate reports periodically.

Should we do a complete re-survey on an annual basis?
