Cisco Nexus Patch Info
I found this online when looking at the patches being installed on vShpere and saw this. If you plan on using the Nexus stuff, please read.

vCenter Update Manager does not list patches or updates for Cisco Nexus 1000V by default. This knowledge base article provides the procedure for adding a Cisco Nexus 1000V patch source to vCenter Update Manager.

See KB Article: 1013134 on how to add the Cisco Nexus Patch info into update manager.
Application Performance
What is the strategy that most organizations are adopting to monitor application performance and troubleshoot in the virtual domain?

"While server virtualization is happening at a rapid rate, tools for managing application performance in these environments have not kept pace," said Will Cappelli, research vice president at Gartner. "In order to understand application behavior, one needs to combine data from the dynamically reconfiguring application layer, network layers, and virtualization layer. Traditional tools which assume that the environments remain static while an application executes are not answering the needs of the Global 2000."

Cost and complexity are 2 major inhibitors that have been overcome by Network Instruments who has a long track record of monitoring and isolating the root-cause of performance problems in the physical domain. http://www.networkinstruments.com/products/observer/virtualization.html

See a workflow sequence attached and download the VM brochure at http://www.networkinstruments.com/assets/pdf/virtualization_b.pdf

Full demonstrations and evaluations can be arranged by calling Rick Kingsley of Network Instruments at 972-219-6811 or by email at rkingsley@netinst.com

DFW VMUG - Venue

The largest group to date has been 100 people. We had 200 sign up. Not sure why the other 100 didn't show up, but I am trying to plan for future growth. If the numbers stay the same, I will keep it at Texas Health in Arlington. If I have to move to a large venue, I'm sure everyone doesn't want to see the same vendor with deep pockets at every meeting. I am looking at other things as well; More sponsors, Platinum, Gold, Silver etc to setup booths at the meetings and that would help offset the cost of having it at a hotel or large venue.

Looking for VMWARE Training...
Hi,

I have used VMware Education classes in the past and they are very good. The only downside is the cost and there may be a wait to take the next available class.

As an alternative, I suggest you checkout my VMware ESX Server video training course. It is a 17 hour course and for $397 it is a great deal compared to classroom training. I will be releasing a new longer course later this summer covering ESX 4 and vSphere.

I am a member of the DFW VMUG and will be at the next meeting if you would like to talk more about VMware training.

Thanks,
application, and security monitoring in the VM environment. The new vTap functionality is what enables them to offer integrated layer 2-7

visibility across the physical and virtual domains.
Using the Observer platform, organizations obtain enterprise-wide views of virtualized resources and performance within virtualized
newbie problem ethernet and disk
I have just started using VMware server 2, I am having a couple of issues.

I have the host as fedore core 10. The Client as Windows Vista. I am having trouble with nat and with getting to a disk drive.

The fedora host has a 750 GB shared disk. I can get to this disk from every computer in the work group.

When I bring up the vista client. I can no longer get to anydisk on the group from any computer.

The Vista client will get onto the internet but will not see any disks that are shared in the group.

the fedora machine has 2 nics and so 2 ip address. I have the vista machine set up with only 1 nat address at present but it shows as 2 in the network page. both as connection 21?

I will eventually (after consept proof). have 2 address on the vista machine with hard addressing.

I also need to access the Blu-ray burner (ide) and as I said I would like to get to a sata disk I don't care if it is done directly or thru a shared network.

Thanks Brad Earl
All,

If you wonder why you don't get all the emails from VMware, you may have acidentially unsubscribed from them. I didn't realize I had my notifications turned off. Here is a website that will help you turn on your notifications so you can get updates from VMware again.
Problems with 3.5u2....
All,

Ford sent this to me and I thought I would share it.

A new situation with ESX 3.5/ESXi 3.5 Update 2 has come to light that I wanted to make you aware of. A bug in this update causes the product license to expire on August 12 (today). ESX will continue to run VMs when the license is expired, but new VM startups will not be allowed, nor will operations such as VMotion.
The kb article is 1006716 at http://kb.vmware.com/.

VMware has pulled u2 from the web site. A new u2 patch will be posted shortly. Until then, the work-around is to back-date the ESX host to yesterday until the patch can be applied.

Thanks for the heads up. I was looking at the registration list and we do have a large number of people from the Fort Worth as well as Dallas. I don't there is an easy solution to traveling no matter where the VMUG is held. I was thinking about moving the start time for the meeting to 9:30am. I think this might help out with the moring traffic. As of right now, the VMUG will remain in ARL.
I would like everyone opionion on this. The VMUG is for everyone.

Three relativly minor issues, but anoying.

1. Web Access will not allow you to log onto the console of a VM after upgrade.

2. Converted a template to VM to upgrade VMware Tools, once converted the VM would not start.

3. When cloning from template, Customization says my profiles are gone, but I can view/edit/delete them.
I used testking to study for the exam. I failed the first time just using VMware documentation, by one question noless. The second time I scored 87%.

The tests were different. The second test asked a lot of questions on the differences between VMware server 1.x and 3.x

Dallas Area VMware User Group meeting - November 7th, 2006
A long time ago when the VMUG got started, there was monthly meetings. About 20 people showed up. When we changed it to quarterly, we would get a average of 60-70 people. I don't think there is enough change in VMware that we would get a good turn-out for monthly meetings, plus we would constantly have to find vendors to help sponser it so we could get food and drinks provided.

I'm open to everyone's suggestions though..

FYI..The next VMUG is scheduled for March 26th. I will post the details ASAP.
Just installed Fusion on a MAC Notebook Pro (OS-X Intel). No issues with install or while in WIN XP Mode any single CD install. But Adobe CS Suite is multi disc install. After disc one is complete, I see NO way to EJECT the disc from the SuperDrive. The EJECT button (top row right) only works when I close Fusion and the virtual machine. How do I proceed? How do I eject a CD while in WIN mode?
