Moved it to the correct forum. More importantly, will find out what the turnaround times are nowadays for Support. What level of support do you have, for what product, and how did you contact Support? (Just some basic info to pass along)

---
Error within the Supportsystem?
Hello,

now everytime I try to submit a supportrequest I receive this:

Error code: TQ44
Error date: Tue Jun 24 02:54:01 PDT 2008
Err 4 user: igi.support@gehe.de
Exception: *<!-- This check here is un-necessary if errorKey was associated in the resource bundle. So much for an error msg -->
Invalid URL invocation*

  The Error Code is different every time i try this. But earlier in the morning I was able to submit a request, this needs even several tries and I had some notifications about errors in the Siebel-system, but one time it works.

Is this a common error or is something false with my browswer (Firefox2 / Linux)?

"NAT for ESX Server 2.5 and 3.0 Hosts Is Not Supported"
Hi Deepak

I am facing the same issue with the servers having Natted IP I tried all the settings specified in the forums and no luck.

As per vmware support Natting is not supported on ESX 3.0. Any specific settings you suggest for it to work ?

Looking for comments on Patch Download Tool
I consider myself a slightly above average, but eager and involved, computer user. Bill Gates has had me by the throat for so many years, but the end of 2007 I made the move to Mac, imac laptop ipod iphone, a few Windows programs I can not do without like Outlook and Photoshop. I bought and installed your terrific software and it is maybe one of the smoothest running programs on my computer. I must tell you, however, that I regularly receive the notice of the available upgrade and I was finally able to FIND it on your website. However the process is such computeresque gobbledegook(?) I fear to download it if I did understand the various options and patches. I have version 1.1.
VMWare and Microsoft SQL, Where's The Support?

Yup, there are many discussion in this community on whether SQL is supported or not. It is, but they also reserve the right for the customer (you/us) to have to reproduce the issue on a non-virtualized platform. They will cut you a break if you're a Premier Support customer and will be more accomodating to you as you're paying them the buck$.

LANDesk System Management features not working on VM
The feature which do not seem to work correctly are:

Realtime Monitoring / status from LANDesk Server Manager Web Console

View Remote Event Logs from LANDesk Server Manager Web Console

Evnvironment:

2 LANDesk Core Servers LDMS/ LDSM 8.8 running on Windows 2003 Server hosted on a ESX Host.
The 2 Core server are on different ESX hosts. Each ESX Host has several VMs.
Remote agents /clients are physical systems whic are Windows 2000 Serversand Windows 2003 Servers.
These agents connect to the core server via a frame relay circuit.

The problem has been duplicated on VMWorkstation

Are there any known problems / compatability issues associated with VMwares virtual network technologies and the above features?

Any recomendations on tuning of ESX VM or Virtual Network to resolve these issues would be appreciated.
The virtual HW has changed slightly since ESX 3.01 (for example more memory per VM) - check the above mentioned config max pdf for differences.

Customize screen resolution in Linux guest
For those like me who need to customize screen resolution to something like 980x715 in order to use as much space as it's available on the physical screen but don't want to see scrollbars, here's what to do.

Open (as root) X11 config file (which is /etc/X11/xorg.conf in some distributions) and add a ModeLine under Monitor section, VMWare identifier with a line like this:

ModeLine "WxH"  100 W A B C H X Y Z
where
W = desired width
H = desire height
A = (W/100 + 1) x 100
B = (W/100 + 2) x 100
C = (W/100 + 3) x 100
X = (H/100 + 1) x 100
Y = (H/100 + 2) x 100
Z = (H/100 + 3) x 100
where / is integer division.  Eg, if W = 1234, W/100 = 12.

Take a concrete example, I need 980x715, so my ModeLine should read:
ModeLine "980x715" 100 980 1000 1100 1200 715 800 900 1000

Save the config file and restart X and now it's possible to choose such resolution inside a session.

Cf: In KB, there's already an article :
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=748
but we also needs to specify color depth.
Lousy support: SR closed before issue resolved.

Dear Kevin.

We were promised (by email 10th april 2006) that

The status of your support request will be marked as "Pending/Problem Report"
until the feature request is closed.

Feature request # 100352 was apparently created. However you did not
keep your promise, because on 28th august 2007 (one and a half year
later) we receive an email saying

I am just cleaning the database and found this case being owned by a former
employee.

Would like to apologize for that and answer your question.

I wonder what question (I should answer) and how (the SR was closed)?

You can check the status of your SR's here:
I have also checked the status of your feature request.

It is not yet fixed because this behaviour is cause by the SAMBA project that
is having the same issue.

This obviously shows that the problem I originally filed has been
misunderstood. The problem is related to VMware Shared Folder. My description (which can be found on
http://groups.google.com/group/vmware.for-linux.configuration/browse_frm/thread/42559d7d24d29093/2ba14508b29e5b6c?lnk=st&rnum=1#2ba14508b29e5b6c
refered to samba server because I thought/expected that VMware Shared Folders was basically a samba server, but I have been corrected in the SR communication, that VMware Shared Folders is a hgfs file system.

But there is a fix planned for WS 6.5

Well, I will probably try out the beta.

I am closing this SR as I don't think we need to research anything here
anymore.

Interesting, especially because we didn't have a chance to comment on that; replying to webform@vmware.com told us that the SR was closed, and any other direct communication required a support agreement.

I would love to see the SR reopened again until the feature request is closed, just as you promised 10th april 2006. Further I would like to have access to view the status of the feature request that you created upon this problem, I consider that good customer service.
Complaint about partner support - Partner: CESA, Country: Costa Rica
Eduardo,

Sorry to hear of the challengesyou have had in getting information about support options for VMware Server.

The support options for VMware Server are described on the product support page:

http://www.vmware.com/support/services/server.html

This includes a number of self help resources and a product forum. If you desire something more direct and personal, you can also elect to purchase Gold or Platinum support for VMware Server through VMware's Online Store. This service should also be available through your reseller, but you might want to try the online store route since your reseller was not aware of the program.

See here for details on purchasing Platinum or Gold support for Server through VMware's online store:

http://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/newstore/vmserver_sns.jsp

Thanks,
I wanted to know if anyone had any info on using VM's with an AutoPatch set-up. For those not familiar with AutoPatch, it is a matrix switch with 32 inputs and 32 outputs. If I am runningseveral VM's, how would I view them over AutoPatch...or is it possible at all? Example: 3 Plasmas, and 2 projectors= 5 VM's 32x32 Autopatch Modula

Is VMWare free or not?

It depends on which product you're talking about, and what you mean by "free". For example, Player and Server are available at no cost to you; in contrast, ESX, Workstation, and Fusion cost money.

Some people make the distinction between no-cost-to-you free and heres-the-source-code-have-fun* (* - possibly plus some restrictions) free. We might have a couple modules or tools covered by the GPL and which fall in the second category, but our products in general are not GPL'd.

Optimal Memory Settings?
There is a discussion going on in the "VMware Workstation" forum that a few users are confused about, and know one has been able to give a definitive answer to. I was wondering if there is a possibility that someone from VMware's support staff could take a look at the thread and give us (users) some feedback.

The thread is here: Optimal memory setting for WinXP 32-bit Guests on Linux Host?
LUN discovery problem on ESX 3.0.2
Hi All,

I am having trouble getting a 1TB LUN that I have created on my SAN to show up on my ESX 3.0.2 server. Currently there are a total of seven data stores on the server, 2 FC SAN (300MB & 800 MB), 4 iSCSI (300MB x 4), and the local storage "storage 1". The presentation of the new LUN to the ESX server works flawlessly in Command View. When you select the ESX host in Command View the host shows to have the original two SAN LUNs preseted as well as the new one.

I presented the new LUN to my backup server and it shows up on that server immedialtly, but when I scan my Fiber Channel adapters on the ESX server the new LUN is never found.

Is there something you have to turn on to see more than seven data stores? Ideas ?

Thanks

No mouse in the VM window
I have installed the windows workstation version 6.0.2 onto my new Dell laptop running XP+SP2

I have used the new version of VMware to open a W2K workstation I have created using version 5.5 on a different PC, it works fine under this version

The W2K system seems to start succesfully with the desktop displayed, but whenever I click into the VMware window the mouse disappears, it re-appears when I move the mouse outside the VMware window. PS it is a USB mouse.

The help says the mouse may not work if the tools are not installed. So I try to install them. It all starts very well, but when the dialogue prompt pops within the VMware window I can't click on it to tell it to proceed, or if it does accept the mouse click, the dialogue does not clear and the installation never completes

So what am I doing wrong?
absolute frustration!
I have a purchased copy of VMware Fusion running on a MacBook pro with 2gb RAM and MacOS 10.5, and it is duly registered with VMware. I have now downloaded the upgrade to VMware Fusion ver 1.1.1 (72241) which seemed to install OK. On starting Fusion however it now tells me that it is not registered and when I attempt to enter my purchased licence key it either simply refuses to accept it - the OK button does not work - or returns a message that the registration has expired.

Frustrating....but that's just the start! All attempts to contact VMware with this problem are turned away. Firstly my original 30 day installation support has expired...yes...I know that...so to get any support for what appears to be an installation problem...or at the very least a serial number entry/acceptance problem....I'm expected to pay US$24.95....not likely!

The problem is squarely at the feet of the installer, installation process or registration process. I also run that other product as a comparison and have always had cheerful, timely and effective support on the rare occassions I have needed it.

Perhaps this is not the right forum to vent my frustration but as a professional software developer who is now prevented from using what had been becoming a valuable tool I have found no alternative.

this could need some improvement, as most bundled binary modules are nothing just bloat - you have tons of modules in the tools package, but those you really need are always missing.....
VMware Global Support Services is pleased to announce that starting today, December 14, 2007, our customers can sign up online for notification of patches and maintenance releases...directly from our Support home page. With this service, you will immediately be sent an email alert as soon as a patch or maintenance release becomes available on the VMware products you've purchased.

How does this work? You can initiate this activity by selecting the "Receive Patch/Maintenance Alerts" link from our Support Home Page, providing your email address, and then, after verifying that we've got the right contact, you can select the product/s you would like notification on by selecting "Confirm Subscription" from within the email confirmation we will send you. To get you started during this initial phase, we've even pre-selected the products you've previously purchased. And, any time you want to change your selection, simply edit your choices by repeating these same simple steps.

We know that you value receiving patch and maintenance release information as soon as it becomes available. Here at GSS, meeting your needs is our top priority!

And for the record again, there're some ModeLine generators on the web, one of them is

http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl

if one really wants to use some "realistic" data.

However, since we're inside a virtual machine, I don't know if that's really necessary. As a matter of fact, it also seems that even ModeLines aren't necessary as stated in:

http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/XFree86-Video-Timings-HOWTO/obsolete.html

In order to keep our ESX servers up to date on the current patch levels what is the recommendation? Should one check the VM site from time to time for newly released patches or would one wait for a version upgrade? And would these version upgrades contain all patches needed or would one still need to check the patch site and then check that against your ESX servers?

I have paid for VMware Fusion and updates come often which is good. Its a royal pain to have to enter my info EVERY TIME there is a new update. I PAID and you already have my info. If the update is free, just let me have it without asking for my info EVERY TIME there is an update. Fusion requires a serial number to run. Just require first time beta users to sign up so they can get a serial number. Please don't require signing up EACH TIME there is an update. Its really annoying.

WEIRD BEHAVIOR ON A CLIENT'S SYSTEM
I have a client I am supporting. She runs Red Hat Linux as her host Operating System while running Windows XP clone on VMWARE.

When she opens MS Outlook on her Windows she get then application open multiple times without her input. If a mail should arrive, the mail will open several instances of itself without anybody prompting it. It will insert blank lines in the mails As if someone is pressing Enter key on the keyboard. Also the behaviour is so weird that when she tries closing the opened windows, the system will prompt her to save the files and when she clicks 'No' it will go on and safe the mails. This however doesn't happen all the time, but the frequency of occurence is very disturbing and unacceptable for a production environment. The error that pops up after this happens is 'Failed to start the grab state: stale data'.

Once thing I can say here is that there is some corruption somewhere. I don't know which side it could be. Could it on Linux or Vmware and how do I resolve it?

Can soemone be of help?
I have installed Fusion on my Mac 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel computer. When it tells me to put in the Windows XP Home Edition disk, I do. But, it never recognizes that it is there. I have gone to settings and checked that the CD/DVD is connected (I have dual optical CD/DVD drives installed, and I've tried selecting both of the drives... one at a time). I have tried several times to install Windows, but to no avail. Before I send Fusion back to Amazon.com, and purchase Parallels, can you help me?

Makes it really difficult to help as there are so many areas that are often looked. Sometimes what appears to be a VMotion issue turns out to be a storage issue. Can you not attach a USB device and put the logs there and then send those up?

Otherwise, you may have read the necessary files to them over the phone. If the TSE won't help, then approach their manager (usually at the bottom of an email) or ask them to speak with the manager.

TO VMWARE: Serious security issue

Hi,

I am a Gold Support customer and trying to use VMWARE's webpage to initiate a SR. There are several problems I run into:

1. After log in I am presented with my account profile and asked to update it. Sure, no problem. I change the email address and the phone number, save the changes, go back to my profile and check it. Everything is ok. Then I log out, log back in and see again my old profile. I tried it several times. It is simply not possible to change the profile information and save it for the next time.

2. I can, as described above, change my profile temporarily until the next log out. If I do so and open a SR, everything will be fine. But when I try to review the list of SRs, I will not find the newly opened SR. This only happens when I changed the profile in the beginning.

3. From time to time I am being presented with an already filled out foreign SR when I am trying to open a new one. Then just two pages pop up - one blank SR to be filled out by me and an already filled out SR by somebody else. Of course I can see all the personal information of that person.

TO VMWARE: THERE IS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG! PLEASE GET IT FIXED ASAP! I do not want other people to be able to see the SRs of my company nor do I want to see there SRs. I want to be able to change my profile information once and forever and not every time again when I log in. And I want to be able to review my SR list and see all my SRs, not only those who have been opened using an unaltered profile.

This is Platinum Tech Support?!

We're on Platinum and it's been a waste of money so far.

I find the support boundaries are unrealistic, too.

I had an SR today, # 191245141 where I mentioned some of the guests are CentOS guests, the host and the remaining guests are pure-bred RHEL.

I was denied support because CentOS is not on the list of supported OS and thus the issue of the host process crashing or random VMs being shut down must be caused by CentOS.

What is the point in using virtualization to lower TCO when VMware then try to force you to use only licenced RHEL for alll your guests ? Every tiny backup DNS guest or FTP server has to have a RHEL licence. This is ridiculous!

VMware need to be more realistic with their support boundaries and recognize that CentOS and RHEL are technologically almost the same. Just the artwork has been changed!

It's just a cop-out to avoid rendering assistance. How convenient for the Support Engineer that I mentioned CentOS and gave him an easy way out.

My boss is on a rampage and wants to pull the Platinum contracts and purchase three pending purchase orders for more support. Our technical issue will not be resolved and we will tell everone about this experience. Everyone loses.

OEM Support

Our OEMs provide support for VMware when it is bundled with the server. I do not know if it is "free" or an "additional fee" to get this support. You should contact the OEM vendor for more details on pricing and packaging.

Upon purchase of the support, you should be instructed on the ways to contact the OEM support organization directly.

It is possible to get support from VMware directly but you will have to purchase that support separately. You should also take advantage of our online docs, knowledge base and discussion forums.

Hope this helps

tape devices certified for backup in vmware vm

Hi lanit,
For the physical server mentioned above, what VMware product are you considering running it on as a virtual machine?

Based on that, I'd like to move your thread to the appropriate product forum and request input from others in that forum, including those inside VMware.

I didn't see the HP LTO Ultrium-1 drive listed in here, http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_backup_guide.pdf however maybe HP provides support for this product in a VM, for example, via a backup agent?

That backup agent in turn may have to connect to a (dedicated?) host not running VMware products where you attach the tape subsystem hardware.

Please let me know what VMware product you are considering for this and I'll move our thread to an area where you'll get more expertise on backups in that environment.

Thanks,
Capacity Planner

We're having a very similar problem.... we used the test connectivity option and found perfmon was failing on many of our nodes with the error

the specified object is not found on the system -1073738824

Several other folks seem to have the same issue and while there are numerous things to be checked, our issue appears to be connected to a localization bug hinted at in the release notes. The note in question refers to english collectors talking to non english systems. For more info, see Microsoft kb article q287159.

Other items to check:

- Verify all needed ports are open (tcp 135-139 & 445)

- Try with a different id (ie local administrator)

- Reload the performance counters with lodcrt /R as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300956/

- Get the exctrlst.exe tool (from Microsoft) to verify all the performance counters are indeed enabled.

- Go into the registry and grant Full Control permissions/access to Local Service for
*    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT \CurrentVersion\Perflib\.
*    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\winreg
* We’ve also compared and matched permissions for every registry entry under these two.

Verified the permissions on c:\windows\system32\perf*009.dat files are the same for a non-working node as those in a working node

Verify with the local administrator that the GPOs applied to working and non working nodes are the same.

- Look at the local GPO’s and see that they appear to match between working and non-working systems. Specifically, look at
o	Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment\Profile System Process
o	Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment\Profile System Performance

If you google just the windows return code “1073738824” you will find that other performance monitoring and CP tools have had the same problem. In many cases, the root cause has been traced to localization.

•	ZeroC: http://www.zeroc.com/forums/comments/1905-icegrid-startup-performance-cpu-usage-problem.html describes the same error and identifies it as a localization issue
•	Nabble: http://www.nabble.com/win32pdhutil.ShowAllProcesses()-fails-t1944541.html python/win32 code with the same problem.
Error on filing an sr

badflyer,

I did as you suggested and added an attachment to the sr.
Thanks for help- and yes, it would be nice to have a more descriptive error message here (or maybe just a remark next to the input form: "Please note no to enter more than 1500 characters here.")
Network Training

It would be great to see some sort of course be developed for Network Administrators. It seems very often that if systems/network teams are split up it becomes difficult to explain what is being done with Virtualization. It also becomes difficult once the phrase 'Virtual Switch' is used. If there were some sort of class with a virtualization overview, but then focusing on what is done for the network pieces that could help some of these discussions.

Workstation 6 RC2- beta support requests closed- how to submit a request?

With the purchase of Workstation, you are entitled to 30 days of complimentary support. You should be able to register the product and then go to our Submit Support Request area of the web and submit an SR via the normal mechanism.

As for the "defect" area of the web, we are aware of the issue and are working on a fix. We hope to have this service restored soon.
