Target Platform: VDDK supports virtual disk files (VMDKs) for both vSphere, and VMware Infrastructure as well as Hosted products, Workstation, Server, Player
  The VDDK is a collection of C libraries, code samples, utilities, and documentation to help developers create or access VMware virtual disk storage. Several new capabilities including support for vSphere 4.0, reading and writing virtual disks across SAN and hot-add transports and a new API to mount virtual disks.

Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK) Redistribution
If you are a VMware TAP alliance partner at select level or higher, you can request a license to redistribute the VDDK and bundle it with your application so that end-users do not have to install the VDDK separately. Contact your VMware TAP alliance manager to obtain and complete a redistribution agreement
