We are changing the the UserPointLevelCache timeout from 1 hour to 12 hours. This will reduce the number of times that point level calculations are made for each user, and the resulting reduction in cpu load is expected to improve system performance. It also means that when you post to a community or are awarded points for a helpful or complete answer, you will not see your point total updated for up to 12 hours. I expect this to be a temporary change until we have stabilized performance, and then we will return the timeout to 1 hour.

Please note: This will require a restart of the cluster, which will happen between 4pm and 5pm Pacific today.

Is there some really overriding reason why points have to be recalculated every HOUR??

Surely once every 24 hours should be enough to satisfy most people??

How about a survey asking people how often they would like points re-calculated, given that this can possibly adversely affect the forums' speed, effectiveness, etc.??

After the survey is completed and a reasonable time for points updates is set up, just tell everyone when the points are calculated, and how to relate this to their own time zones, if they wish to keep up to date etc.

Is the competition for points THAT important??

I think that forum speed and promptness of responses to questions is way more important than how many points any given person has.

Perhaps a 'manual' points recalc could be done whenever a profile is looked up ur upon request by the user??

Aren't there other things on these forums that are a lot more important to people than points calculations??

Thank you for reading this,
Tom

Thanks, Tom. Good point. System stability and performance are definitely higher priority than point refresh rates.

100% agree.

consider even to create a poll.
