November 21 Update

Posted by Badsah Nov 21, 2007

Last update before we Americans go stuff ourselves over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend: performance and stability appear to be fine for the fifth straight day. Given this, and a combination of VMware's scheduled maintenance windows plus holiday vacation schedules for critical team members, we have decided to postpone the deployment of a second node to our cluster until first week of December.

Thank you, and will be back online on Monday, November 26!

I don't know where or how you tested the community performance. For each of the several posts I made today it took pretty close to a full minute for the editor page to load.

Dale, are you still experiencing this issue? We've not seen this problem, nor has it been reported by other users. Aside from informally performing various activities on the Communities website, we have also had a dedicated resource monitoring the server activity. The only hiccup we encountered last week was a temporary issue with the email-based reply system. For some reason, if you replied to a message via email, it would get stuck in a queue indefinitely. We fixed it with a restart of the server.

Thanks.

Today, I am getting under 5 second page loads - possibly much less even. The difference on my end is that I am on a fast cable connection this evening where I am on a satellite connection from WildBlue.net last week and weekends.

Other things I did on my satellite connection were as fast as I expected; only these pages were slow. Even so, it could be related to the satellite connection. If there are many requests involved in a page, i.e. dozens of images making up things that are better done css-based designs, satellite connections can perform poorly since each image or javascript file or other resource requested as part of the page can require another 1/4 second delay due to latency in satellite connections.

I have not felt like the problems I am experiencing are related to the satellite connection becauese I have consistently heard from others that they are experiencing the same delays. All I can suggest for now is I will watch it this week while on the road with a cable Internet connection and compare that again with the satellite connection this weekend.

Thanks,

Dale

And let me add that there have been times in the recent past where my experience was pretty fast loads on the satellite as well - those have just been far and few between. But I will continue to watch.

Okay, thanks. When you start seeing trouble, shoot me a message and I'll investigate.
