Today, VMware announced in a press release that SAP Managed Services, SAP AG's internal IT infrastructure provider, has deployed the VMware platform pervasively across its IT environment as the main virtualization platform for agile and adaptable implementations of SAP solutions.

This announcement follows a keynote that Dr. Krips (Sr. VP at SAP Managed Services) previously delivered at VMworld Cannes, and various presentations on this topic by Markus Winter (Head of Strategic Projects, SAP Managed Services) at VMworld conferences. SAP Managed Services developed a very comprehensive framework utilizing more than 8000 virtual machines with VMware software as its primary platform with the purpose of providing virtualized infrastructure solutions to internal SAP teams and customers.

We were excited to see so many customers interested in SAP virtualization with VMware. After Leo Apotheker's keynote we talked to several customers at our booth who confirmed what Leo said about Virtualization being the Global Trend #1. Together with Michael Schatten, from C. ROB. Hammerstein (CRH), who is one of our key customers, I presented on TCO savings taken out of SAP landscapes by VMware. We had over 100 people in our room, and a good discussion on sizing, performance, support, and of course, TCO.

CRH_Project.jpg

Mr. Schatten did a great job explaining why CRH migrated from an IBM midframe system to x86. As a result of their smooth replatforming project, performance and availability are better, CPU consumption is much less, and CRH achieved TCO savings of 81% compared to their previous landscape, including an ROI of only 3 months! This is fantastic! And I encourage all other customers on this platform to take a close look at our presenation, which you can find here. Then, get in touch with VMware to plan your migration project like some of our customers are already doing. It has been a great DSAG conference, and we'll be back next year.

We are excited to be part of SAP TechEd Phoenix next week. If you're attending the conference this year, come by the VMware booth, no. 705, to meet the VMware SAP team and learn how the advanced features in products from SAP and VMware combine synergistically to create a powerful and sustainable business process automation system. With the introduction of powerful new features in the VMware vSphere product suite earlier this year, there has never been a better time or a better platform for virtualizing SAP solutions. Many SAP customers are already using VMware solutions to achieve cost-effective high availability, true fault tolerance, efficient, simplified disaster recovery, and lower energy consumption.

At TechEd, we've got experts with deep SAP technical expertise ready to explain how you can take virtualized SAP environments to the next level, or simply how to best get started if you are in the process of considering a virtualized SAP architecture. We will also share with you explicit customer cases documenting TCO savings of 50%-80% over three years by migrating to a virtualized SAP landscape!

But to the logistics:

  • Booth location: no. 705

  • Booth demos: Zero Downtime of SAP Central Services using VMware Fault Tolerance & Efficient, Automated SAP Disaster Recovery with VMware Site Recovery Manager

Also, there are a lot of very interesting presentations and demonstrations around virtualized SAP deployments by our partners, including SAP, Novell, HP, IBM, EMC, Texperts, and many others!

'Hope to see you there,

  • Joachim

After updating the SAP Linux support notes 1122387 and 1122388 to reflect VMware vSphere support (see Update on support for vSphere for SAP productive systems), the updated SAP support notes 674851 and 1104578 for 'Virtualization on Windows' have now been made available as well... at least in German. (The updated English version should be available shortly). In addition to the production support for vSphere, the support notes also contain other welcome clarifications.

We will communicate the update of the English version once available. Until then: know that vSphere is supported with Windows and Linux guests, and/or make extensive use of your favorite dictionary.

SAP SAPPHIRE Orlando Review

Posted by jorad VMware May 22, 2009

We are just returning from SAP SAPPHIRE in Orlando and would like to share some of our experiences and impressions.

Given the economic climate and the flu, the overall attendance was a bit down from the previous year. I believe Leo Apotheker (SAP CEO) talked about 10.000 participants, plus 8.000 attendees on the web. But while the drop was noticeable in the overall traffic, the discussions were excellent. First of all, we had more time for much more in-depth conversations with customers and partners. We heard about new customer successes and talked (and listened) to new customers who are considering implementing SAP on VMware. Interestingly, while customer discussions until last year were more focused on support and core functionality, now they generally center around how VMware software can be leveraged more strategically in SAP environments. It is good to see that the thoughts are heading towards the SLA-driven SAP datacenter, very similar to what Dr. Krips (Sr. VP, SAP Managed Services) talked about in his keynote in Cannes (see also: SAP Managed Services Keynote at VMworld Europe). Correspondingly, also the overall partner community mindset has clearly moved from “This is interesting, let us see how we can make this work in a few engagements,” which we often encountered in previous years, to “This is our VMware strategy – how can we best work together?”. Very nice progress indeed. In light of this, it was very good timing that we had this year also our first breakout session at SAP SAPPHIRE/ASUG (with Mike Somers of Dow Chemical – see discussion below).

Most importantly however, it has become clear that SAP has discovered virtualization as a critical area. Virtualization and cloud computing were highlighted in three keynotes, including those of Leo Apotheker and Hasso Plattner.

Leo Apotheker talked about virtualization in the context of Timeless Software. Timeless Software enables customers to take advantage of new technologies and developments in a non-disruptive manner:
http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/38-3104-5874/timeless_software_small.JPG

It is very much self-evident (and always has been for you and us) that virtualization and cloud computing support a concept of this type extremely well by making the compute infrastructure supporting the business processes flexible and scalable, and allowing it to be easily upgraded without disruption. We are glad to see that SAP sees the synergies here as well.

Hasso Plattner talked mostly about in-memory databases, which was extremely(!) interesting by the way. From my layman’s view, this approach opens up completely new possibilities in terms of what you can do with your data. And the demos were very, very cool as well. However, Hasso also briefly talked about virtualization and cloud computing, and how they support today’s and tomorrow’s computing needs for businesses. The picture below visualizes this nicely.

plattner_small.JPG

On the opening day, Stefan Kneis, who heads up SAP's Global Customer User Groups, showed a screen shot of the SAP Adaptive Computing Controller interfacing with VMware- (and Xen-) virtualized SAP landscapes (see also News on the SAP Adaptive Computing Controller: Integration with VMware Infrastructure), using it as an example of how SAP works with the partner ecosystem.

VMware participated in the second event of the SAP Green IT Community. One always needs to be a bit careful in terms of what to expect from these communities in actual output, but this one seems very promising, as it connects customers, service partners, software partners, and hardware partners with the goal of delivering end-to-end energy savings for SAP customers. And it is output-focused, so stay tuned.

Last but most certainly not least, there were excellent customer sessions. Mike Somers of Dow Chemical did a great job explaining how Dow Chemical uses VMware virtualization in its SAP datacenter (and I added a few details around VMware’s products and strategy in the SAP space). Dow now has about 200 SAP VMs, and they haven’t even migrated all of their apps to their new NEA operating platform. Also, Jeroen van Hemel (VP of Operations at Infonet, Netherlands) discussed their architecture leveraging Suse Enterprise Linux and VMware virtualization. See this video for more details.

So overall SAP SAPPHIRE was quite exciting for us, and an excellent continuation of the SAP Virtualization Week three weeks ago (more to come on this as well).

In the first two talks today, Zia Yusuf (EVP for the SAP Partner Ecosystem) and Peter Graf (SAP Chief Sustainability Officer) gave great endorsements of virtualization in SAP environments (and beyond). They also clearly articulated how it aligns with SAP's strategy.

Here are two comments from Zia (and I am paraphrasing)

-Virtualization is a no-brainer technology and everyone should be using it
-Let's jointly (SAP and partners and customers) work on (further) increasing adoption numbers

Peter Graf was talking in more detail about sustainability and Green IT, as well as the new Green IT Community. Really good stuff. Here are a few of his key points:

-Customers following a sustainability strategy have done 15% better than others during the economic down-turn
-Business benefits of virtualization: one customer was able to save close to $6m in the first year, translating in about 30% savings.
-Customers should use virtualization a lot more and a lot deeper
-*Natural 1st step to Green IT: VIRTUALIZATION*

Peter also showed a great graph/tool on how SAP measures carbon usage and carbon goals in-house.

Very nice kick-off, and it really shows that SAP has stepped up their game significantly when it comes to sustainability, Green IT, and virtualization.

P.S.: As a side note, we will shortly communicate virtualization adoption numbers based on a study by Raad in Germany.

The 3rd annual SAP Virtualization Week was just kicked off with a presentation by Zia Yusuf, Executive Vice President. A focus point of SAP moving forward is Green IT, and as an integral pillar of this initiative is the creation of the Green IT Community, of which VMware is a key founding member.

Definitely the right direction to go!

The preparations for this year's SAP Virtualization Week are in full swing. The format has changed quite significantly from last year, and for the first time you will now be able to participate online (register here). Complementing on-site attendance (location: SAP Labs in Palo Alto, contact the organizer Roland Wartenberg of SAP at roland.wartenberg@sap.com directly), this new option greatly amplifies the reach of the conference. Also, with one track and twenty five talks there will be great focus.

Let us have a brief look at the agenda. VMware will be well represented, reflecting the adoption of our technologies in SAP environments. Steve Herrod, VMware’s CTO, will be speaking about “Virtualization’s Future: From the Desktop to the Cloud”. Vas Mitra and I will be discussing more concretely the Virtual Data OS as it applies to SAP customers. We will be touching on strategy, proof points, and best practices. We will also show a very interesting demonstration of what we are doing with SAP and partners in the SAP Co-Innovation Lab. Also, Christoph Reisbeck will be supporting Fujitsu Siemens' discussion of the FlexFrame/VMware integration. In addition, other partners (EMC, Intel, T-Systems…, and SAP) will have very interesting things to say about how their technologies interface with VMware’s stack to bring value to SAP customers. And last, but certainly not least, there will also be a fantastic panel discussion with Steve Herrod and the CTOs of Citrix and Microsoft.

Most importantly however, many customers will be presenting their experiences and views on SAP virtualization at this event. We are looking forward to hearing from Theo Gibson (Director at Honeywell) about their plans and experiences around migrating Honeywell’s ERP environment to the VMware/Intel platform. Slobodan Malbasic (IT Director at Tarkett EE) and Miroslav Krzic (Coming - Computer Engineering) will present their usage of VMware Site Recovery Manager (see also Efficient Disaster Recovery for SAP Landscapes) for their SAP DR framework. This will be the first public SRM/SAP customer talk that I am aware of. Rick Scherer (San Diego Data Processing Corporation), regularly blogging here, will provide another customer perspective. Also Markus Winter of SAP Managed Services, who has presented at VMworld conferences about SAP's internal use of VMware virtualization (see also Dr. Krips keynote at VMworld Europe in Cannes two weeks ago), will discuss new status and plans.

And hopefully, the presentations for all of the other really interesting sessions that had been submitted (EFI, Dow Chemical, Kirchhoff Automotive, SAP COIL, ....) will be made available as well.

In short, it will be a great event – on-site, or online!

'Hope to see you there,

Dr. Wolgang Krips, Sr. VP at SAP Managed Services, gave an excellent keynote address today at VMworld Europe, taking place in Cannes. He spoke about his view and vision on how virtualization enables new business models and service innovations, that are needed to meet user requirements. You can see the keynote here. (His keynote starts at around 75:00, but you should of course also see the address by Paul Maritz, VMware's CEO, discussing VMware's strategy going forward).

There are many exciting things happening in 2009 in the area of 'SAP on VMware', and our joint customers and partners are very much at the center. A perfect example is the upcoming webcast (Thursday, Feb 5, 9 am PST) between Intel, SAP, Southwestern/Great American, and VMware. Scott Allen, Strategic Relationship Manager in Intel's Worldwide SAP Alliance, will give Intels's perspective on virtualization and discuss how Intel's technologies provide key benefits to 'SAP on VMware' customers. Roland Wartenberg of SAP will talk about SAP's virtualization strategy and proof points, and Ed Solima and Dave Brogan - the voices of the customer - will talk about their SAP/VMware/Intel implementation, its benefits, and the lessons learned. We are looking forward to the discussion.

You can register here for the event!

The call for papers is now out for the upcoming SAP Virtualization Week 2009, taking place April 20-23 in the SAP Co-Innovation Lab in Palo Alto, CA. This is the third event of its kind, and the predecessors in 2007 and 2008 were great successes. It is a great opportunity to learn about other customers who have virtualized their SAP systems, to share and discuss your own experiences, to meet with partners and vendors providing solutions in the SAP virtualization space, and/or simply to see what is new in this area.

Needless to say, VMware will have a strong presence.

The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2008, and you should send your abstract/presentation directly to SAP's Chief Virtualization Strategist Roland Wartenberg (roland.wartenberg@sap.com), or go to this link to learn more.

'Hope to see you there,
