My experience with SAP is nothing short of horrible. One company needed to hire an entire team of administrators to control what amounts to little more than a glorified font end for Oracle SQL. It was supposed to make project and resource reporting more efficient, but instead required four times the fiddling that using excel timesheets needed to do the same job. Turns out buying the system was the only way the company could pay its was through otherwise undeserved ISO certification.

Being able to manage or just plain categorize virutal resources can be a gift of great magnitude to the usefulness of combining business decisionmaking with the IT world.

One of the biggest hassles I ever faced in the corporate world was trying to manage IT resources manually. Of course, that was back in the bad old dark ages of non-integrated sub nets and datacenters, but still the idea that I had to spend countless man hours just describing basic functions in a non-tech way was daunting at best.

That is actually not the case. SAP defers to the database vendors regarding their support for virtualized databases in the SAP context.

I am not sure what you mean with "VMware does not support MSCS running on mulitple Physical Hosts " ?
My understanding is, that you can have two VM's, each running on a different Host participating in an MSCS Cluster. You have to use shared Storage and put the Disks into shared mode, but other than that it should work like any other MSCS Cluster.
It is also possible to use a Physical Host as the active node and a VM as the Failover node, so that you can consolidate the Failover nodes onto one VMware system.

At SAP TechEd EMEA 2008 in Berlin, VMware Virtualization was once again a topic presented by many companies and discussed in many presentations (see my previous blog). The sessions that I attended were again packed and the VMware presentation as part of Roland Wartenberg's session LCM300: Enterprise Virtualization Map was visited by 250+ people. IBM claimed that x86 virtualization was the key topic on their booth where they showcased a 96-core server - perfectly suited for VMware. The VMware live-demo on HP's booth was another highlight and received a lot of positive feedback from visitors. I spoke to SAP customers who told me that the integration of Virtual Center into SAP Adaptive Commuting is a step into the right direction.We are very happy to hear this.

Overall, both event were great, and I am sure VMware will be back next year.

A really interesting green computer technology I found is desktop virtualization. It's where multiple people can use the same computer at the same time each with their own monitor, mouse and keyboard. This saves a lot of electricity and e-waste. A company called Userful recently set a virtualization world record by delivering over 350,000 virtual desktops to schools in Brazil. They have a free 2-user version for home use too. Not bad at all considering the best 5570 score is 25,530 using HT and DB2. Getting within 10% of native performance of a system using an arguably better DB layer is very impressive.

A good percentage of our customers runs on Linux. One example of the public references is EFI (http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/customers/ss_efi.pdf), who runs SAP on RedHat Linux completely virtualized (all tiers, all environments). They are also using Oracle.

EFI also migrated from a Unix environment to x86/Linux with VMware with great results, hence it sounds like their story is very relevant to you.

Do you know of a reference customer that is running SAP using Oracle on Linux VM (Suse/Redhat Enterprise)?
All these case studies so far just seem to talk Windows Servers as the Guest OS.

We are a Unix shop and are looking for some references, experiences.
